@amszmidt the SSPL seems to expand BOTH "user" and "derivative work" definitions, while AGPL mostly expands "user" and GPL uses a more limited definition of both. LGPL removes the "derivative work" requirement for use in libraries.

As I said this might make SSPL unenforceable but not sure if it makes it unfree; reasonable people can probably differ on that point

fwiw I note that this is in the four freedoms though I'm not sure if it's a novel interpretation to say that "compelling you to release source code of all derivative works, with an expanded definition of derivative work" constitutes "not allowing you to modify and use source code how you want"

@amszmidt If "limiting how you can use or modify the software" makes something nonfree, wouldn't AGPL and GPL also be nonfree? They both require you to release source code of any modified versions to users.

@fossunleashed Since one of the lesser known points of the (A)GPL (and what makes it actually enforceable) is that it doesn't compel others to do anything with software they've written themselves; it's clearly delimited as the software licensed under the AGPL and isn't "viral" except in the sense it applies to derivative works.

I am not a lawyer but having a licensing condition that compels you to do stuff with _your_ work might not hold up well in court.

@fossunleashed This part of the license is likely what makes it not open source

"all programs that you use to make the Program or modified version available as a service, including, without limitation, management software, user interfaces, application program interfaces, automation software, monitoring software, backup software, storage software and hosting software, all such that a user could run an instance of the service using the Service Source Code you make available."

@ricardo most of the money and serious contributions in FOSS come from big tech

it's kind of an awkward relationship

I just license all my stuff under AGPL on the offchance that if big tech picks it up, they at least need to talk to me about licensing

Not sure why MIT license became the standard

My ($150) wireless earbuds have a 1 year warranty. 1 year and 3 months after I bought them, the case broke. It can't be repaired.

Seriously considering swapping back to wired headphones. Why does tech get worse quality every year?
