There's apparently some important thing going on.
Whatever it is, it's not as important as my ice cream sandwich.

Speaking of IRS...
I'm really disgusted that this admin killed Direct File after just 1 year. It's not even just that it was free to use, it was far easier and more intuitive than the commercial products, who are now expected to charge higher prices.
I haven't even started my filing process yet. It's such a huge waste of time because they put in all those fake progress bars and time wasters, and constantly nag you to give them more money.
@rebeccawatson I think my favorite argument I've heard for why these are needed is something along the lines of "criminals in stolen cars have no right to privacy."
It may sound weird to favorite this.
It shows their mindset. They believe everyone is a criminal. Guilty until proven innocent.
Because these don't just track criminals. They track everyone.
So far, my Zigbee stuff has had zero issues since switching over to the new dongle/coordinator. Shit just works.
@prettygood So, fun story time: I worked at a company many years ago that was involved in manufacturing and we developed a "lab in a box" that was a half height server rack packed with everything to run a manufacturing site, including the serial interfaces to the machines. We tried to encourage them to find a place for the deployment that wasn't directly in the manufacturing area due to the heavy amount of dust generated that tended to destroy the fans and tape drives.
One of them put it in the men's bathroom.
We probably had the least amount of dust related problems with that one.
I have a loose connection somewhere between my monitor and my mac mini.
I guess I need to address the cable mess... Ugh. Might make this a tomorrow project.
@minego @hellomiakoda @mossyfoot @alice I started going through this, and, well, I might need to talk to someone now. I've kinda suspected I was on the spectrum, but the tests linked on this page are basically screaming it at me.
For now, I'm planning to not seek a new diagnosis given the things going on. And I won't wear the label until I do get actually diagnosis... if it happens.
In 6 days, in the US, EV prices will shoot up by as much as $7500 thanks to changes in policy and incentives. Used EVs and hybrid vehicles will also see a price hike.
So if you're considering an EV, the next 5 days is when to jump on it.
From my understanding, the transaction just has to start in the next 5 days. You don't need to take delivery in the next 5 days.
As TikTok US falls under Larry Ellison due to fears of mass surveillance through the platform, it's worth reminding that Larry Ellison is very excited about AI powered mass surveillance.
At the end of the day, all that changes is who is aggregating the data.
Oh, and the propaganda.
I use an app called Cronometer to estimate my meal carbs so I can determine my insulin dose. It's a pretty solid system for my diabetes management as their library of food and their nutritional value is vast.
In our diabetes support community, we strongly discourage using LLMs to make medical decisions. And here's why:
An LLM just told me my meal was nearly twice as many grams of carbs as Cronometer indicated. This is a meal I have saved in Cronometer so I've dosed for it using its information in the past and trust it.
Had I dosed for the carbs the LLM gave me, I would have overdosed on insulin.
This is why we say don't use AI to make medical decisions. They have no problem trying to kill you.

@georgetakei Damn leopards keep eating those faces.
I don't know what's going on with #gravy and I'm too afraid to ask.
I was opposed to the whole “TikTok ban” situation. But ByteDance may have proven Congress’s point.
Biden noted he would not enforce the ban and allow the next administration figure it out. ByteDance still turned off their services to Americans, blaming the Biden admin.
And then they turned it back on, thanking Trump.
The congressional mandated ban was already in flux. The shutdown was self-imposed. This was all planned.
Maybe congress actually did have a point.
@howisyourdog I'm not a Firefox user so I haven't really dug into the latest in being upset with Firefox making an AI plugin, but it seemed like they were making an LLM to summarize pages. These have been known to get things very wrong. I don’t know if it's on-device or if it uses ChatGPT.
The enshittification of AI has lead to the choice of AI used by VLC to be groaned at. I even saw a post cross my feed of someone looking for a replacement for VLC.
VLC is working on on-device realtime captioning. This has nothing to do with generating images or video using AI. This has nothing to do with LLMs.
This is not generative AI.
While it would be preferred to use human generated captions for better accuracy, this is not always possible. This means a lot of video media is inaccessible to those with hearing impairment.
What VLC is doing is something that will contribute to accessibility in a big way.
AI transcription is still not perfect. It has its problems. But this is one of those things that we should be hoping to advance.
I'm not looking to replace humans in creating captions. I think we're very far from ever being able to do this correctly without humans. But as I said, there's a ton of video content that simply do not have captions available, human generated or not.
So long as they're not trying to manipulate the transcription using GenAI means, this is the wrong one to demonize.

@mcnado My dad was healthy when he caught the flu and it irreparably damaged his heart. He was on a transplant list for years after that, but did not survive. He did not see the age of 40 because of the flu.
This year will mark 30 years since his passing. I’m in my 40s now.
This is why I hate “it’s just the flu” and why I get vaccinated.
@dashrb @VE2UWY There’s a lot more in the telematics. Like…a lot.
@tknarr As a long time sysadmin, this is absolutely true. It’s always baffled me when people use work resources for personal use and got in trouble for it, then complained their companies were spying on them.
It’s just that I really don’t think people understand as all of these technologies grow and expand, surveillance will run deeper and deeper. And it’s all intentional. Especially in the age of sucking up as much data and content for training broken AI.
If you're surprised Tesla takes and keeps recordings from their cars after seeing the news about the Cybertruck in Vegas, you shouldn't be. This is not something new. Tesla has been taking and storing media for many years, claiming it's used to train their AI capabilities. You can't opt out either.
And Tesla employees do access it, make fun of you, make memes, and share the content internally, without any legitimate reason to access the content.
While this is about Tesla, this is a growing problem across this and other industries.
@tinydoctor Never really been into rye whiskies. Cheers, though!
