@whitequark yeah, I knew this. I … try not to think too much about it. The mail part is why the format has uh, opinions about line lengths.

@x_cli @dalias @eff and even if something is technically possible, it doesn’t mean we should do it. The only age verification we need are those landing pages where you click yes or no; the visitor determines if it’s appropriate or not and the website trust their judgement.

@whitequark Reminds me of how in Nier: Automata you can uninstall your OS (and it’s instant game over if you do). This is just a logical next step. Like dual booting.

@cadey @dalias the compute cores are slower than they otherwise could’ve been for games, because they spend more area on small bit width compute like FP16 or smaller, which isn’t used by anything else but AI. I heard from an HPC guy that FP64 has plateaued, if not even dropped, in the last few generations.

@whitequark when I worked in database land, a company known for making big, expensive servers approached us to ask if content addressable storage at the block device layer, with a programmable controller, was interesting to us. Fun times.

@whitequark “to-do: HDR support (?)” I don’t think JPEG supports HDR, so that feature is kind of already working as intended

      Intel Meteor Lake’s NPU
      from Chester Lam
AI is a hot topic and Intel doesn’t want to be left out, so their Meteor Lake mobile processor integrates a Neural Processing Unit (NPU).

@whitequark can't decide if this is better or worse than the Intel NPU that's just an array of SPARC processors.

@dalias I doubt it. You need the handshake to finish before you can reliably tell if the client is an AI crawler or not. And then there’s not much expensive stuff left AFAIK. You could send an oversized TLS record that would cause the client to close the connection and make their SREs scratching their heads.
