Although a lot of people in the eXodus are moving to the (similarly) American capitalist #Bluesky, we on Todon.eu and Todon.nl are also growing. People being here (new or coming back) made the right choice. The #fediverse is currently the only federated non-commercial/non-capitalist social network, powered by the #ActivityPub protocol, a W3C open standard.

In short: don't believe the hype!

🎉 🤞 The data files of the database are moved to new faster (more expensive) disk. That was the bottleneck. It seems to be solved now. Only todon.eu needs to be synced with the rest of the fediverse. This will take a while (this is normal). Therefore I'm going to start some extra processes. Maybe it will be a bit slower, but not as bad as before (and it's for a good reason 😉). I will keep you informed.

P.S. I re-enable full text search after all fediverse posts are synced.

🚧 Dear Todon.eu community, I am very very very sorry about the very long outage we had today! 🙏

Our hosting provider needed much more time than they thought. This can of course happen, but it's a shame for you that it happened so quick after the previous outage.

Although we are now online, it is still very slow. We are working to make sure it's back to normal.

ℹ️ 🚧 The issues with todon.eu are not yet solved. We are working on a permanent, fitting solution. Hopefully somewhere tomorrow it's fixed, but our hosting provider can't guarantee this completely. Maybe todon.eu needs to be migrated again (internally, like today), we don't know.

I ask you for patience and again sorry for any inconvenience.

Because everything is slow, there are three things to remember:

1. if a post looks like it is not send, do not press the toot button again, or else you double post. first check it in your timeline.

2. there is a delay from posts from other servers. this will not go away yet. Now it's one hour, but the delay is growing. When the overall problems are solved, this will also be fixed.

3. preview cards from websites are also delayed. Same story.

@MediaActivist Thank you! But we have no plans to start a Pixelfed server at the moment.

ℹ️ UPDATE: It seems the migration was successful 🤞, BUT there are still (resource intensive) background processes running to make sure we are in sync with the rest of the fediverse. So please give that time and also be aware of some lag when using todon.eu.

After we are in sync with the fediverse and things calmed sown I'm going repopulate the search index. This will take approximately half a day, but newest posts are indexed first.

Just call it :twitter: #Twitter or :birdsite: #birdsite for short or something like the Fascist Mancave of Elon Musk or The Website Formerly Known As Twitter (TWFKAT). Oh and #Bluesky doesn't have a serious logo. You can always use this one: 🟦.

A: In short: Tell them to join Mastodon (or another ActivityPub non-big-tech compatible social media website). TLDR; #Meta (formerly #Facebook) and also the owner of Threads, #Instagram and #WhatsApp, is a big tech multinational that steals their data and fuck with their privacy. Therefore the community of your Mastodon server decided that they don't want Meta to steal their data and fuck with their privacy as well. If it are anti-capitalist friends, you can also tell them that capitalists shouldn't own your online (just as your offline) social life. They probably say that they already know this, but that the network effect keeps them over there. Better not push it from there any further. Some people are more sensitive for neoliberalism than others. 🤷🏻 Or you can move to mastodon.social. 🤔

🚧 We have some problems with our search engine. I tried to solve this using conventional methods, but it didn't work. Because we are a radical server I'm going to fix it the radical way. That means purging elasticsearch (the search engine), purge its database files and reinstall/reconfigure it. I already did this on todon.nl during the 4.2 upgrade, so it should work like a charm.

After that the search index need to be recreated. That will take approximately 1 to 2 days.

In the mean time we only have basic search. Thanks for your understanding.

🚧 Bad news. The solution I thought should work, didn't work. All worked fine with re-installing, but the same problem occurred. It stops every time with indexing.

What now? The next two days I don't have the time to find a solution, like asking some experts. So I will add a half-baked workaround. Two times per day I will let the system index manually. Hopefully this will soften the pain until I find a solution.

🆕 A week ago todon.eu was offline, because of connection issues in our datacenter. Although we have a status page with UptimeRobot, it has a difficult to remember URL, plus there is no way our admin (me) can leave a message with what's going on. Until now!
