#Tasmania forests are proper wilderness
As close to temperate climate jungle as you can get.

I taught my nephews this technique.
As soon as you realise you lost your trail.
Mark a tree/landmark (say with a shirt).
Then walk in a straight line away from the marker, repeat in all cardinal and intercardina directions for 30meters. Extend range if you don't find trail.
Walk cautiously checking ground with a pole so you don't fall into a ravine/twist foot.

Personally, I always keep the rough bearing to the sun for reference, even when I use GPS.
