@thomasfuchs @elk Thank you! That is far too subtle. At the very least, the icon should toggle into a selected state so it at least draws my eye to it. I really tried to look for something to turn off and this didn't even register.

As I turned it on my accident some first time use notification would also be a good idea.

@elk I love your web client, I use it every day but is there any way to turn off the 'disappearing nav' animation? As a UX designer, I find this really problematic as I can't 'see' where I want to go before I move my mouse.

@elk Let's try this again. I love your client but the disappearing nav bar is problematic:
1. I can't see at a glace if I have any notifications
2. I have to move my mouse to see the icon to target

This is visual design over UX design. Could you at least offer an option to turn it off?

@elk Problem solved. Turns out I was in a completely hidden "Zen Mode". I have no idea how I got in and there was no apparent way to get out. Some kind person told me to hit the 'z' key and presto! I'm back to normal.

UX Advice: First time use: TELL ME I"M GOING INTO ZEN MODE!
Also: provide a more obvious way to get out of it (I still don't know how to do it other than 'z'

In light of the great news about the Texas Observer newspaper not shutting down through the power of crowd funding, it only seems appropriate to reflect on what news WE ALL pay for. (or don't pay for, kind of the motivation for this post)

I pay for a few news sites but I find myself appreciating The Atlantic more than all the others. What's your favorite?

Possibly naive question: why do the dates wrap and not like break by week?

I'm not sure what is more frustrating:
1) That this is even considered rational
2) That so many think it really is!

Don't get me wrong, there are likely SOME reasonable uses of blockchain but getting rid of ALL central control, with zero accountability or ANY type of redress is so massively naive that it completely takes my breath away.

@rriver this is exactly the type of comment I'm referring to. Where did I say anything about changing it to *my* way? That's pure projection.

I'm a #ux designer, there are clear ux issues that should be discussed. I'm not forcing any solutions! I just want to talk. Why is that so threatening?

Right now, instances feel like servers run by some guy in a basement. The fediverse expects us to all trust our maintainers almost blindly. I don't want a corporate overlord but I need *something* to base my trust on.

I chose my instance because it's well run. But it wasn't easy to find! I'm looking for a new level of 'the mastodon covenant', a higher bar so people feel some trust in the instance.

It's NOT a guarantee! (Twitter wasn't...;-) But it says "grown ups are here"

Today is the first time I've felt exhausted by the mastodon community. Almost all of the angst is coming from a few "old guard" that seems dead set to assume I'm either a corporate shill or ridiculously demanding.

I've engaged with them in good faith, trying to understand only to have my arguments strawmaned into extreme positions.

I'm a #UX designer. There are problems here and we should be able to talk about them. I'm not in a rush, I'm just trying to help
