@Infoseepage I’m familiar. The TV adaptation of peripheral was one of the inspirations for the book I’m writing.

@Infoseepage Neuromancer too. I think I’m going for inspiration from Gibson and a rejection of Iain Banks, sorry Iain “M.” Banks 😂

@Infoseepage My original comment is as much about the levels of imagination as what was possible to achieve on a set with practical effects.

Take Neuromancer, for example. The book pretty much started cyberpunk. It has ambitious ideas about AI, computer-brain interfaces, cybernetic implants, yet in the orbital station where people live under spin gravity, the sky is CRT monitors playing a video loop, not, say, a 3D proc-gen skybox even. In a book too, where practical effects aren’t a limitation. IIRC Neuromancer also has pay phones but that’s beside the point I’m trying to make.

@Infoseepage That’s barely 80s, but they did get touch screens right. Even the horrible screen real estate usage.

60-80s sci-fi overestimated literally every technology except screens, which it comically underestimated.

I propose renaming socialism and capitalism peopleism and moneyism, respectively.

The point of society can’t be to accommodate and/or pacify sociopaths. Too many people are defining what the defaults of society should be based on the notion that everyone and their grandmothers are probably sociopaths.

“No one will want to work without capitalism”, “it’ll all be chaos and looting without police”, “we are pro immigration but also secure borders” are all manifestations of these sociopathic defaults.

When RFK says “we’re doing the studies to make the proof”, he’s being as honest as he has ever been in his life. Wearing his heart on his sleeve even.

This is exactly why they can accuse scientist of lying about their findings, being political, having agendas etc. with a straight face.

These incompetent charlatans really believe everyone thinks and operates like them and now are emboldened enough to just speak their mind without filter.
