👨🚀🚀 3... 2... 1... Liftoff!

Last night, Europe's new heavy-lift rocket, #Ariane6, successfully made its inaugural flight.

Ariane 6 can launch both heavy and light payloads to a wide range of orbits for applications such as Earth observation, telecommunication, meteorology, science and navigation.

It is a key step towards secure and autonomous 🇪🇺 access to #space.

Congratulations to the teams at European Space Agency, National Centre for Space Studies, Arianespace on this success!

🇪🇺 We provided €50 million under the Macro-Financial Assistance to the country, to which we will add €22.5 million in grants by the end of July.

🇲🇩 Moldova also signed the Joint Procurement Agreement in the area of health, joining forces with the #EU and other participating countries in case of a serious health threat.

If you are travelling outside the EU, make sure to add to your list:

We have sent Amazon a request for information under the Digital Services Act.

We are seeking more information on the measures taken to comply with the DSA obligations related to:

🔹 the transparency of recommender systems and their parameters;
🔹 the provisions on maintaining an ad repository;
🔹 its risk assessment report.

Based on the assessment of the replies – to be provided by 26 July 2024, we will assess the next steps.

Today marks 90 years since Marie Skłodowska-Curie's passing.

We dedicate this day to recall the legacy of the very first woman to win a Nobel Prize, the first scientist to win it twice, and the only Nobel laureate in two different sciences!

We so deeply value her heritage that one of our most successful fellowships bears her name: Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions.

The "Pay or Consent" advertising model of Meta fails to comply with the Digital Markets Act.

The EU is withdrawing from the unmodernised Energy Charter Treaty, mostly due to concerns over the protection of fossil fuels investments.

This treaty for the energy sector is not compatible with the #EU's climate and energy goals under the #EUGreenDeal and the Paris Agreement.

Preserving competition is essential to foster innovation.

Today we have informed Microsoft of our preliminary view that it has breached EU antitrust rules by tying Teams to its popular productivity applications included in its suites for businesses, Office 365 and Microsoft 365.

Our preliminary findings indicate that the changes made by Microsoft since July 2023 are insufficient to address our concerns and more changes are necessary to restore competition.

Apple’s new slogan should be “act different.”

Today, we informed Apple of our preliminary view that its App Store rules are in breach of the Digital Markets Act, as they prevent app developers from freely steering consumers to alternative channels for offers and content.

We also opened a new non-compliance procedure over concerns that its new contractual requirements for third-party app developers and app stores fall short of ensuring effective #DMA compliance.

🛰️ Satellite data can be used to detect marine litter from space.

Scientists discovered they can use satellites to locate patches of floating litter, also called “windrows”.

By analysing images taken by Copernicus satellites, they found thousands of litter windrows in the Mediterranean Sea, ranging from a few hundred metres to 20 kilometres long.

This can facilitate clean-up operations, making our oceans cleaner.
