    While true in a certain way, it is not a productive view. It's like saying that love is a chemical reaction. The reason why AI of Google produced the absurd results is that it ilacks a world model. In theory it should be possible to train a model that approximately your thinking, but so far LLMs were fundamentally dissimilar to you.

    A guy in his late 90s from Dagestan, Russia, tried to volunteer for the war in Ukraine. The commissar of draft declined him, because he's over-age. He appealed to the minister of defense (Shoigu back then), but was rejected. Well, duh.

    But when he turned 100, he's been awarded a Hero medal for his service in WW2 (he was an infantryman). Putin presented him with the award, and he complained about the rejection, saying that's he's feeling fine at 100 and can serve. Putin ordered the bureaucracy to take a look at the rules. It ended with the governor of Dagestan apologizing.

    If he got killed or captured by Ukrainians, it would certainly cause a news flash. Also come on. How delusional can you be.

    @sun One of my favourite manga is Renai 3D Debut, unfortunately incomplete in scanlations. It is an auto-biographical story by a woman who married a colleague. Both of them are manga authors... And the guy became famous for a manga about a school that banned wearing underwear. Apparently they changed nothing and the dynamic duo are presented with their real names (but their editor is not - at least someone got privacy).

    @sun In that case they can limit the maximum amount to 29 days or something. Why insist that employees used up their vacation time instead of letting it expire?

    This actually going much further than the nag email. A while back they created a "Christmas Shutdown", when everyone goes on vacation. I was wondering, what if I use up all my vacation before Christmas and then have no days, am I fired? But even that was not enough. Some 5 years ago they added "quarterly recharge days", which also take it out of your PTO.

    I flew over the Apple campus in Austin today, and saw a construction going on. This screencap from Google Maps shows that the ground was broken a long time ago. But today they have all of that stuff cleaned up and cranes are in place to construct buildings.

    How comes that everyone owning a commercial real estate is crying bloody tears right now, but Apple is building a campus extension? What has happened to remote work? And why is this happening in Texas? Don't they have a giant campus in California?
