I fucking hate the rich for jetting around, welcome in every country, while the majority of us couldn't just decide where to live based on what we feel fits us best.

It's 82 F outside right now and 41% relative humidity (which is very unusual for old CA climate). There's intermittent cloud cover so the sun oven has only reached 225F (107.2 C). The sun had traveled since 11:30am so I reoriented the sun oven.

Its reflectors were shading the rest of the table too much, so I set up a step ladder to put the black enamelware pots on to continue heating until the beans/birria are done, hopefully. #SolarCooking

Left out the unused water from yesterday so it started warming up first thing this morning.

Set up the sun oven again around 11:30am and put in pinto beans I had let soak overnight. Hoping to get a batch of beans to have with frozen birria I'll cook in an hr or so.

I also put out another black enamelware pot of water at that time. So 2 pots heating directly, 1 pot of beans in oven.

Checked on things again. Oven 225F, sky still intermittently cloudy...which is why it's only in the 80s today.

Beans started with a lot of water I assumed would boil off so when I added the birria, which has its own liquid, it got more stew-like. I'll likely have to boil off more liquid inside later, but I've left it out to cook more. #SolarCooking

Oven is a little over 250F since turning it to face the sun directly again. I put the defrosted birria in.

I accidentally grabbed the lid to put it back before putting a potholder back on. Easy to get fooled by the fact that you don't see fire. Dropped the lid when I got a little burned. It's still hot! #SolarCooking

I don't fear spiders the way I fear snakes, but we do have black widows around here.

I am, however, grateful that their webs are snagging seeds of Silybum marianum because those make a lot of work for me. None of the sources of those (Union Pacific, City of Davis, and my slumlord) do much or any prevention.

I'm seeing a photo get passed around without the photographer's credit, without a link to the source.

I know it's hard to be less impulsive about the boost button when you agree with the viewpoint, but it's good to keep up good media habits all the time so you don't boost actual BS later.

And you can get the context, which may be exactly what you thought it was, but better to see which journalist it came from, which newsmedia, etc.

I put a 9" black enamelware roaster pot full of water in the sun oven. That's heating up to do dishes later.

This keeps me from using electricity or propane to heat water. #SolarCooking

Frozen birria out in the Global Sun Oven, which I put out about 10 min before I put the meat in. It was 300 F (148.8 C) at that time.

I added a TJs mix of orzo, lentils, etc. to stretch the meat & its sauce so I have more for the money.

This takes advantage of the brutal heat today AND keeps the heat of cooking it out of my kitchen/trailer.

Birria is done and the orzo, lentils, etc I put in with it are super-expanded! Oven is just below 350 F (176.6 C) right now.

I took it out of the oven, but left the black pot in the sun for now to keep it warm. I am not hungry for it yet and having it inside the trailer just heats it up before I'm ready to deal with it.

I feel like something that should be emphasized in gen chem when they're covering the specific heat capacity of water is just how hotter the atmosphere on Earth has to be for the oceans to have heated up by as many degrees as they have in places.

(They could stand to link the oceans heating to acidification in the acid-base lessons, & link to the effects, like coral bleaching)

Post inspired by just how much time a 9" roaster pot of water has to spend in a 350F solar oven before it boils....

As we already have wildfires going in CA and are set to have scorcher weather Tues - Thu, let me remind folks that not only are N95 masks good for keeping from getting/giving COVID, but also good for filtering smoke from wildfires.

Good to have a supply on hand and to be wearing one.
