There has to be a word or phrase for that paradox where you have two options and one of them is definitely worse, but it also doesn't feel right to say the other is better.

I'm sure there's absolutely no reason why that's been on my mind a lot of late.

The elegance of this strategy is that it works for literally any other situation.

Fascists coming to your ____? Chase them the fuck off.

Time and time again, they are proven to be cowards who will run unless they get numbers on their side. And they try to get those numbers by appealing to your sense of tolerance and civility. Fascists will act like they believe in free speech right up until the point where they have enough influence to drop the pretense. By then, of course, it's too late to do anything about it.

That's why the only appropriate course of action is to refuse to tolerate fascism from the outset. You don't need to "wait and see" or "find out what they're up to." We've already seen what they try to do literally every time; we know what they're up to. Tell them to fuck off early and often.
