Ever a problem among Euros, but massively exacerbated by the current political doings of the US, is the idea that Europe (the vague social identity / continent) is more enlightened, more democratic, and more just than the US.

Fascism is on the rise here. Meloni is a fascist. The still-rising AfD is fascist. Frontex has done horrible things to migrants from the SWANA region (have we forgotten Moira? the thuggish aggression of the so-called Libyan Coast Guard?). Hungary is openly anti-democratic and queer-phobic. The UK is viciously anti-trans. Our social democratic institutions are being gutted by the offspring of old labour parties. Even the most "wealthy" and "progressive" nordic/scandiavian States are virulently racist. We have a dozen monarchies.

We are hardly better. Stop patting yourself on the back and feeling smug. Fix the problems here.

@hakan_geijer It’s very odd living in the USA right now, because a bunch of my friends here are like “this place is fucked, gotta move to Europe.”

Meanwhile, my friends who live in Italy are like “this place is fucked, gotta move back to the USA.”

      …huzzah.

There has to be a word or phrase for that paradox where you have two options and one of them is definitely worse, but it also doesn't feel right to say the other is better.

I'm sure there's absolutely no reason why that's been on my mind a lot of late.
