#heatwave tips! I grew up in Cyprus where it was often this temp or above. Here's what you need to do today: close your windows now, feels counter intuitive but your home right now is cooler than it's going to be outside very soon. Close all blinds, and if you have rooms that heat up more than others shut off those doors to isolate the heat into that room only. Fans are good and with a wet cloth in front also excellent. Use umbrella when you're outside, helps keep cool and against some UV.
@aral 100% with you, I would be doing the same in desperation I have no doubt. I'm glad you're doing this for them, you're an amazing person able to take on this magnitude of suffering every day. I will take your advice thank you. No need to fwd unless you want me to, I really don't want to get folks in trouble for being desperate.
And yes very long time! Lovely to be in touch, despite the circumstances. Glad to see you thriving still 💞 and thank you again for what you do.
Anybody else getting lots of PMs from ppl from the "verified in Gaza" Mastodon? Asking for money, with heart breaking stories. I'm not sure what to do. It's making it hard to stay on Masto right now. I donated the first time, a fairly decent chunk, but now I am feeling somewhat overwhelmed. @aral I saw you're attached to this, is there anything we can do to bare witness & help within our means but also protect our mental health from being approached this way? I don't want to close PMs for all.
Have been talking about this with folks across tech product teams over the year, this is happening as standard in larger companies right now. Pretty crazy stuff. Reminds me of when sales folks make spurious calls just to get their call count up to hit targets.
About a month ago I started making my week start at 11am on a Monday instead of 9am. The quality of life difference is huge. I don't get Sunday dread now, and I spend the morning walking/gardening. Much less body/ brain shock to being at a desk 9am after a lovely weekend.
Heads up my dudes, my son needs to do work experience this summer and he's a programmer. Nearly 15, can do 3 decent languages, main in Java, been programming since 4. All he wants to do is be a developer. Anyone offer work experience these days? Two weeks in July. London or Dartford way or anywhere in between. Ta! Retoots appreciated!
Heading off to judge the #teentechawards at the Savoy in London. I'll be onstage later presenting an award. Bit nervous, you know me I don't normally do public speaking due to phobia. Any tips welcome!
My nephew who I am very close to has had a bad motorbike accident. He's at John Radcliffe hospital. I can't get to him today and visiting hours end at 8pm. He has nothing: just a burner phone donated txt only. No music, no headphones, no games, nothing. Don't suppose anyone has like an old DS gathering dust he could use for a day or two, maybe? Or like an ipod/mp3 player with some music on? Maybe a radio with ear plug socket, and some spare headphones? Long shot!
Protip from a hiring human: I often see #FediHire posts and I'd definitely like to BUT I rarely see person's country in the post. I'm less inclined to start a chat to find out where they are but if it is in the original post I would definitely get in touch if I could help. Why does it matter? Aren't we all remote now? Well there's a lot of hybrid now but mostly it's because me + most hirers can only hire within certain countries for legal reasons. Contracts, banking etc. Pls add location! 🙏 ❤️
Really struggling to be on Mastodon because everyone I follow is (very lovely and brilliant) very right on, very left wing, and very morally outraged. Obviously with very good cause, but I really miss the silliness of old school twitter when it wasn't just an echo chamber of doom every time I logged on. Who can I follow that just toots memes and daft shit to make me smile? Or has a lovely account that isn't frequently tweeting politics? Would love recommendations to try balance my feed out ❤️
Has anyone else noticed a regression in how tech companies treat people? I felt like for a little while a few years ago things were getting better: treating people as humans not resources, not working on stupid founder fancies but useful products etc but I swear I've noticed this rolling back the last year. Or is it just my unfortunate witnessing? Feel like it's related to the job market, companies having more power than the people again.
I'm hiring for one of my favourite clients, and I'd love some boosts to get this far and wide please!!

Had to watch this excellent TED talk today by sex worker Juno Mac in 2016, as part of my university work, and it blew me away. So I'm sharing, and hoping it will be eye opening for a few others.
