Wow!. And, “ “Some subjects had normal-looking taste buds, while others showed structural disorganization,” which sounds a lot like the disorganization of pre-cancerous cells in many tissues. I’m not saying that these folks might get cancer, but I sure hope that the researchers are considering this possibility.

The philanthropic economy. Where rich folks get to decide how to spend the money that you should have taxed.

@skinnylatte I sure hope she’s more successful than all the other restaurants that have come and gone from Jack London Square. I don’t understand. It’s a great location.

@inthehands I’d rather that we find a better solution to this and that it happens BEFORE the election.

60 Minneapolis CEOs: “ With yesterday’s tragic news, we are calling for an immediate deescalation of tensions and for state, local and federal officials to work together to find real solutions.”

    Two unrelated points revealed:

    1) The initial clause in this statement acknowledges that it’s only when a white man gets assassinated will they object to federal crimes against our civil rights.

    2) Signing their names shows that they acknowledge and embrace their responsibility for what their limited liability corporation (LLC) says and does. So, if their corporation is found guilty of misdeeds or crimes, it is the people with those names who should pay by going to prison.

Monetary fines are “just a cost of doing business.” Prison for the CEO is how the law should work.

@twrling Also interesting to know that the “office block” described in this article is in a “tower” on the UC Berkeley campus that stands within meters of the Hayward fault and is incredibly vulnerable to seismic collapse. These guys really don’t think very clearly about risks, either for themselves or for the rest of us.

@twrling That guy Shlegeris is clearly of the same ilk as those he criticizes for being “kind of irresponsible, and … not … thinking through the consequences of the technology that they’re building.” Anyone who loves Uber, as Shlegeris states he does in the article, has clearly not thought through the negative consequences it has had on automobile traffic and the future of public transit. These guys are clearly neither rocket scientists nor competent chess players.

“Owning the Libs” will go down in history as a slogan of the powerless and vulnerable who want to impose the power of other on those who are even less powerful and more vulnerable than they are.

@lazerwalker My first aid instructor told us, “No one ever died from an overdose of epinephrine, but people do die if they aren’t given a big enough dose of epinephrine.” He also told us that epi-pens carry more than a single dose (to ensure that the patient gets enough) and it’s possible to tear open the outer casing of an epi-pen to get access to the remainder and inject the remainder into the patient using the same needle. He even told us that his own life had been saved by someone dosing him with an out-of-date epi-pen after he’d been stung by a bee. Don’t depend on a past-date pen, but don’t throw them out, as the expired dose could still save someone and at the very least will not hurt them.

I’m guessing 800 to 1000 people at Embarcadero Plaza tonight. Lots of speakers. We marched to the immigration office and back to the plaza.

Just completed an 8-hour wilderness first aid class. So grateful to learn the latest ideas about what interventions are most successful. Most everyone in the class was a field scientist, so we understand how science works and that new information and new data can yield new, better protocols.

@skinnylatte My “need to get out of the city” feeling has nothing to do with escaping people. It’s about needing to see wild plants rather than gardens, see insects, hear wild birds, and to escape the constant background roar of cars and motors. To hear some quiet, to hear the faintest of breezes in the trees or shrubs, to hear the crackle of dry leaves turned over by foraging ground birds. I’m happy to have other people around, so long as they leave me some quiet.

@thomasfuchs There are plenty of examples of AI models working in limited circumstances. For example, amassing the texts of large numbers of cuneiform tablets to identify a hymn. AI models are just another form of statistical methods used for finding patterns. We use standard statistical models in science all the time. I imagine that the AI style of models will be incredibly useful in those types of contexts. What they cannot do is “think” or reason and there seems to be no indication that they will be able to do so any time soon. However, that is no reason to throw AI models out the window.

@FelisCatus @Beldarak @CubeRootOfTrue @David It’s frustrating how few techno-crats have any concept of the sciences of ecology, agronomy, or public health. It’s what leads them to fantasize that we can live and reproduce on Mars or in space ships.
