A month ago, I read forecasters who said September would be extra chilly in Ontario.

Now they’re saying it’ll be unusually warm (per the usual, these past few years).

Did I dig out all of my fall clothes for nothing? Do I need to pull the Hawaiian shirts back out? After Labour Day??

The wildfire smoke that's drifted over Ottawa is clearing a bit, I can see more of Gatineau across the Ottawa River in Quebec.

This haze looks a little like routine urban smog, but Ottawa doesn't normally see any smog.

The wildfire haze seem to be becoming a "new normal" in the summertime though.

Sigh.

Whatever argument they think they're making for preserving heritage is watered down by the fact that their bland bungalows are just property cash cows at this point. That's the reality.

These are not ornate Victorian-era mansions. They're just going to be razed and replaced by something else eventually anyway.

Just saw a news article about a plane being diverted due to a
"biohazard" incident, where a passenger vomited, and it got several other people nauseated on the plane.

So: when these types of "messes" occur on planes, why don't they keep a box of kitty litter on the plane to assist with clean up?

It would at least be handy with absorbing smells from fluids, and possibly with cleaning up messes.

It isn't like a package of litter would take up much space.

I suppose it's possible that it will be tried. It'd be very messy, with unforeseen complications (impacts to some businesses when their workforce is gone).

But logistically, how do you deport hundreds of thousands or even millions of people? Is there an efficient way of doing that, that we aren't aware of? I doubt it?

But efficiency won't matter as much as instilling fear, creating chaos, perhaps.

More sad stories about seniors on low fixed incomes trying to scrape by. The problem isn't going anywhere, anytime soon.

I don't know where they go from here. Reduce rent by renting a room? Getting roommates?

Renting a bed at $600/mo in a house with a half a dozen students?

I have no answers.

I realize most of them are U.S. "isolationists" in some way, shape or form.

But weather doesn't start and end at national borders.

I'm not sure that the U.S. is centralized enough for a fascist dictatorship to truly work there. I suppose I'm naive. But outside of some states with their own tinpot gods, I don't see how it could be done... eh, I suspect there are too many complexities that haven't been factored in by the Project 25 folks, I think they see things overly simplistically.

Swing voters aren't consuming a daily diet of Democrat hopium. They don't hang out on mastodon. They don't have peer pressure browbeating them to vote a certain way.

They're reading all the right-wing blogs and websites with articles about Biden's fumbling and frailties.

Swing voters need a reason to vote Democrat. They need their minds changed. What's going to persuade them?

Don’t think I’ve ever heard of an entire shopping centre of this size going under… some stores seem busy, but then, a few have certainly come and gone since the place opened.

Years ago, I read somewhere that Ottawa’s actually short on retail space compared to our population.

Maybe too much has changed since the start of the pandemic? More online shopping?

It’s too bad that HBC isn’t supporting a heritage designation for this local landmark (relatively humble as it may be, it still fits in along a main drag where many heritage storefronts have already been maintained as pediments for high rise developments).

When I think of a 400-year old company, I don’t automatically connect it to opposition to heritage… well, they must enjoy playing hot potato with the topic.

Maybe all the heritage storefronts aren’t actually integrated into high rises… with a couple of exceptions, I suppose I must stand corrected…but I think this is a cool feature for Rideau Street… the old school Main Street buildings with the new condos and offices behind them…

Clocks need a lot of maintenance if they're old enough -- I guess most of the time, they eventually wear out.

If clocks eventually all wear out, I suppose it makes sense that people do too.

One: Education doesn't necessarily correlate with intelligence. We all knew that rich airhead who took 6 years and 3 majors to scrape by with a D average to get a degree.

Two: Educated people who are sharp and crave power and influence, can be sly and cynical and exploit the rubes, using conspiracy theories and the like, when it suits them. The current cultural climate suits it perfectly.

It's disingenuous to see education as any bulwark... People are nuts, educated or not...

Days are up and down. It isn't all doom and gloom. More thoughts on that to come too.

That might sound a tad depressing, but if you've ever enjoyed feeling blue to a sad song, you know that there's a kindred soul feeling it too, and there's a communion there. So not so lonesome in the end, perhaps.
