From this distance (Australia) that looks like a good plan.

Our last mass shooting was in 1996.

The government compulsorily bought all automatic weapons and destroyed them.

It's now illegal to have an automatic weapon.

We haven't had a mass shooting since.

It might be because there's very few guns and they're hard to get.

Apparently locking children in youth detention in separation rooms with no toilets or running water, sometimes overnight with no bedding, raises significant human rights concerns.

Frankly, neither can I. Is it possible that we are immature as a nation? We cling to any coat tails within reach (US, UK) and then make a virtue out of it. It takes a special kind of doublethink. Our only chance of being a republic is for the British to dump them.
