At some point we really have to reckon with the fact that this system we have built consistently selects the greediest, cruellest, most selfish people and puts them in charge of everything.

We may say that is not the intention, that's not how it's meant to be. But it is the reality of it. Over and over again. In many different places, contexts, and moments.

A system's purpose is what it does, not what we think it could do.
And we clearly need a different one.

The Government has proposed criminalising peaceful protest in certain areas (near residences, which include embassies, public areas if a decision make lives nearby and more). This is an incredibly dangerous attack on our democractic freedoms, which are guarenteed to us in the bill of rights act.

A vibrant and healthy democracy relies on citizens having freedom to challenge and disagree with elected representatives, even when it makes those in power uncomfortable. Citizens should not be criminalised for peacefully demonstrating outside embassies, in public spaces, or outside the homes of those in power.

Today the government announced a huge orange roughy catch reduction in the collapsed Eastern South Chatham Rise fishery. 🐟

This is a step in the right direction, but still doesn't go far enough.

The fact that the Minister is now considering closing parts of the ocean to protect spawning fish is a significant shift. ✊

Our demand is for all seamounts to be off-limits for bottom trawling. 🪸

Bought a refrigerator for the whānau. 🐧

Am adult, I guess. 🤷

While buying the refrigerator, the sales person enthusiastically pointed at one shiny new model fridge:

- This one has a WiFi connection.
+ Nope. Don't want that.
- It's alright, it's really only for firmware updates.
+ Nope. Nope. No internet at all for the fridge please.

Call me a luddite, but I am staunch in my belief that almost all of my home appliances have no business being online and are actually much better offline.

Imagine the possibilities:

"Our food has all gone off because a hacker got into our fridge and is demanding a bitcoin payment if we want it to be cold again."

Nope.

"Sorry, the OTA firmware update has failed and your fridge is now bricked. As we've stopped supporting that model, here's a referral code to buy a new one with 1% discount."

Nope.

"Oh you want ice? Temperatures 0 degrees and below are now part of our monthly Refrigerator Premium package. For only $29.99/month you too can make ice in the comfort of your own home."
