Is it a zero sum game?

a plan could be:
- switch immediately to forks maintained by people determined to not let any of these planned enshitified anti-features live;
- learn to live with different views of the web (qutebrowser, links -g, etc.) for truly web-compliant sites;
- engage in a serious, critical discussion on collectively securing a future (that includes funding) for auditing and mid- /long-term developments such as a safe/reliable web-browser;
- watch/support https://servo.org/

so, let it be clear:
I DO NOT CONSENT to Mozilla Corp. accessing or using ANYTHING i type in my browser, whether to serve ads, train LLMs or ANYTHING.
@nomad2035 hmmm from my own experience, it's rarely as simple as "get one new thing and boom!", as the beast has many, many heads...
have you managed to give up on using: gmail/gapps/gmaps/search/youtube (in my book: proxies *do* count), and to execute no javascript related to google ads, stats, javascript, etc.?
i have been trying actively for the past 10-15y and my blacklists still probably let stuff through from time to time...
@giantspecks CWs are Content Warnings ;) Many people care that topics considered violent or traumatic be presented as such. What should or not be presented under a CW seems to depend a lot from people to people, from culture to culture and context to context... so it is worth keeping an eye and an ear open for it.
You put one by clicking the icon below the text edition field, like the one on the picture below:
Also:
🚫 Some instances have moderation and content filtering/blocking policies: admin(s) decide for everyone to block content (whole instances, people, or keywords). Choices can be discussed/made transparent.
Some find this makes them feel safer 🤗
⚙️ One can filter themselves ("filters" in settings ⚙️ menu), and decide, without having to disclose it, a list of keywords to remove from their timelines.
✋ One can mute or block people.
Some find this empowers them and give them more autonomy 💪
also:
Each message ("toot") can be shared (select with icon under editor) with either:
🌍 the whole world
🔓 the whole world, but be not further listed in your timeline
🔒 only followers
✉️ only some people (ie. private message)
Different timelines (icons on top left of default interface), to see more messages/people to follow:
🏠 "home" shows everyone you follow
👥 "local" is everyone on your instance
🌍 "federated" is local+everybody followed by someone in your instance
Also:
🧐 Experiment with different accounts on different instances (sites like https://instances.social/list can help you). Every instance has different feel, vibe and community (and rules). Find one that you prefer or use mutliple accounts/personas/instances.
🏷️ Use plenty of #Hashtags as it is the only way to actually search through the #Fediverse...
❓ Ask around! Many people will be pleased to guide you.. There is no stupid question :)
💖 Be part of making the Fediverse better and more welcoming!
🎉 Welcome to newcomers! 🎉
A few personal tips:
👌 the Fediverse is NOT twitt*r! enjoy a more relaxed, courteous, benevolent way of interacting! you are part of it!
🤚 introduce yourself! also fill bio and post a couple "toots" before following people to have more chance they'll follow back..
👍 favourite and follow generously! This is how to create link around. No algorithm-god is spying on you, telling you who to follow, what to read! \o/
⚠️ many people care about CW... learn about that
💗
@Sarahw exactly! that's why i use a #pinephone with #postmarketOS and #sxmo! (not saying everyone should do like me, i am just exploring path for my personal freedom to help make it viable for others...). #linuxphone
yet using no such device at all is also a valid option...
@smaurizi Congrats Stefania! <3
What an an amazing work, incredible perseverence, and evidence that un-compromising journalism is still worth attempting in the long run! 💗
One can only salute your courage and marathonesque effort! ✊
🤔 💭 (When people will find out that after leaving #Twitter/#Meta they will have to quit using anything related to #Google...)
@stf nice, but what type of sensors? (i could RTFM this...)
As you can see on https://www.airgradient.com/shop/#!/AirGradient-ONE-Indoor-Monitor-Pre-Soldered-Kit-Version-9/p/594725501/category=155176011
the AirGradient One has a
Sensirion SGP41 TVOC/NOx Sensor, a Plantower PMS5003 PM sensor, etc. ... and those are a bit pricey, and chunky. I am pretty sure i would have noticed similar beasts on the Rad10.
If by "air quality" we mean just CO2 and humidity, yeah there are tons of cheap things for that.
I am wondering about thin particles and specific pollutants, and also molds...
Hello Fedi, 💗
Do you know anything about *indoors air quality measurement*? 💨 📈
A few questions here:
- is the "Air Gradient One" truly one of the most exhaustive + affordable option (respectful of people's computing freedom? https://www.airgradient.com/indoor/ Or is there something better?
- is that precise enough that you could move in a space and identify sources of particles? (stashes of devices, windows, carpets, etc?)
- how about mold? is there any DIY solution for those?
