@liztai@hachyderm.io I think it's partly timing, partly internet hype machine making it much easier for everyone to get into it at once

the timing was good. 2019. Guess what happened in 2020? It coincides with the donghua, and the novel translation (one version of it or several, I forgot) was also complete. There were marketing for the donghua, cdrama, etc.

So, for many, it's their gateway cdrama, and that can be a very special experience

@liztai@hachyderm.io it's not a drama with a good budget, and the acting is not very polished, especially the first few episodes. But the themes, structure, types of characters are very new to people who haven't experienced cdrama

@liztai@hachyderm.io I did not rec the Untamed... haha, I didn't rec TGCF (Heaven's Official Blessings). I did not actually like The Untamed cdrama. Didn't finish TGCF either. But danmei fandom generally likes those two a lot, so idk. stick with it a bit and see if it clicks? if it doesn't no biggie.

@liztai@hachyderm.io my father wanted me to be educated in the pj bubble so it wasn't really an accident ahaha. Die die must register in a PJ school. Cantonese was family + location. I wish I can speak Hokkien though. I couldn't communicate with my grandparents in my father's side till the end

@liztai@hachyderm.io my school had a lot of old teachers who taught when the medium of instruction was English so half of them ended up teaching subjects that were supposed to be taught in Malay half in English anyway

@liztai@hachyderm.io I feel like it's English educated is also not quite the correct way of describing also because there's a difference between mostly Malay-medium national schools and the private/international schools... Haha. But yeah our system a bit rojak
