@daytonamess Having your own website should always be priority #1, but it never hurts to have an email list too.

My advice would be that even if you don't have immediate plans to send any newsletters, just set up an email sign-up form anyway so people can add themselves if they want. If nothing else, email can be a last resort for reaching people if/when various other platforms fall short.

    (I use @buttondown, for whatever that’s worth.)

@pixelfed Do filters take some amount of time to become effective after you set them up? And/or if content was posted before the filter was set up, should it still be visible?

I set up a filter to hide items with a specific hashtag but items with that hashtag are still visible in my timeline. I’ve tried logging out and back in, clearing caches, etc.

(This is for an account on the pixelfed.social server)

For anyone on the fence about whether or not to post about That Thing You Worked On: Please do it.

I love seeing the things people are doing here. Your hesitancy about self-promotion is a good sign you are thoughtful, and whatever you are working on is probably also thoughtful and interesting to others.

Also please include any relevant links. Hyperlinks make the web go ’round. (And include the https:// part at the beginning of the URL so it will be automatically turned into a clickable link.)

    • The Markup

I’m a big fan of @themarkup’s Blacklight tool for checking the user-tracking tech on any website. Seeing all the trackers used on the sites you use and love the most can be a sobering experience.
    https://themarkup.org/blacklight

One under-appreciated use of the tool is for checking your own website for trackers you might not even know exist in your code. It helped me uncover and remove some unwanted Google tracking code hidden in a JavaScript file for an old project recently.

How did the red-on-gray color combo for warning buttons make it all the way through the chain of approval at Apple?

There are so many fun little labels *everywhere* on these Amtrak trains.

@dansup @pixelfed I am so happy to hear all of this and will anxiously await the new updates! I’m already in the TestFlight program for the iOS app but if you want anyone to do even earlier testing for the app (or web interface) please let me know.

@dansup @pixelfed Oh my goodness this is such good news. Thank you so much!

Does this mean you’ll also use a different method/dataset for determining what place names are shown at the top of each post? And/or maybe the place name will be editable for each post, separate from the geo coordinates?

@dansup @pixelfed Heck yes!🎉 A photo map has been at the top of my Pixelfed wishlist! Can’t wait to see these pizzas mapped: https://pixelfed.social/NickSherman

I am very curious though: What data is used to place the items on the map? Will you finally start using geotag metadata from uploads? And/or allow location to be set with specific coordinates?

The current situation for assigning vague/arbitrary/ambiguous place names has left me wanting for more, for several reasons.

Does anyone know what the tiny standalone numbers on analog thermometers correspond to? I always see them marked in the lower range of temperatures but never knew what they mean. They change between thermometers, and often aren’t placed on the same scale as the other numbers.

That feeling when a website’s normal scrolling behavior is controlled by a JavaScript tool instead of the native browser functionality.

“Commercially Available Chairs in Star Trek”:
    https://www.ex-astris-scientia.org/database/chairs-trek.htm

It’s like the Star Trek tag at @FontsInUse (https://fontsinuse.com/tags/3236/star-trek ) or Typeset in the Future (https://typesetinthefuture.com) but for chairs, and impressively exhaustive.
