@lanodan @pony @eal they kinda are though? like, shopify is in it for the rails, and they just forced a rubygems takeover. doesn't seem to be the first major piece of infrastructure under their control either.

@dalias @lispi314 $200 is also an arbitrary number. there's a fair amount of people using phones under $100, for whom even $207 would be twice as much as they'd normally be willing to spend on a phone..

i don't think people on the english-speaking internet understand that not everyone chooses their devices (like android/ios or windows/mac) solely based on their merits. for most, price is a big concern. if you only have $200 you can spend on a device, you aren't getting apple hardware. it's not a question of preference.

@SuperDicq @xyla i agree we should, but i think there's lots of different forces at play that make it complicated. i also honestly don't know how people interact with it, but judging by what they say for many they don't seem to engage with the art aspect of it. and if artistic merit isn't the point, then regulating it like any consumer goods makes sense.

@SuperDicq @adiz @xyla it probably isn't what they meant but i don't think it's a bad comparison? you can use cocaine responsibly, especially if it's legal. you can also absolutely ruin your whole life with it. in which case it probably isn't just cocaine on its own but combined with a general sense of emptiness in life.

@SuperDicq @xyla yeah that's fair. i suppose in an ideal world, there would be porn with no or negligible harmful effects. but i think that given the current situation, it's kind of hard to achieve that? like, the culture around it would have to change very significantly to mitigate the effects on social dynamics. and with lots of other things, they might be similarly harmful. but that harm is more apparent to parents and teachers, so they can at least try to intervene. and i think sex ed would probably go a long ways to reduce the harm but not completely.
i imagine regulation would probably help, as with any media like movies and such? but whatever the current situation is doesn't seem good.

@SuperDicq @xyla eh i don't care enough to find references rn but if you're actually curious you could read some feminist critiques of pornography (such as creating unrealistic expectations, self-image issues etcetc, especially concerning people with no firsthand experience), as well as the mixed data on addiction and such

@SuperDicq @xyla there's a fair amount i think, it's just age verification is notoriously ineffective for its stated goals, but can be very successfully used for other completely unrelated and usually malicious purposes
