don't get me wrong, i like that type of stuff! i like my floral pattern airpods case, i used to enjoy cute phone cases and i would've considered getting a completely unnecessary colorful top for my old aeropress go if i hadn't gotten an even cuter pink aeropress. i used to carry my passport in a cover with a cartoon fox on it and my id in one with a floral print. i'd even consider getting a "decal" sticker for the hardware wallet that i don't use anymore if i had spare cash and didn't live in argentina. but like, yubikey?? for some reason it feels like, dunno, unabashed consumerism. those weren't supposed to be fun!! yubico trying to extract money from their loyal nerd userbase smh

though to be fair, the same is true for those aeropress go lids. they're expensive, completely unnecessary and my first thought was like, the new owners really are trying to extract as much money as they can and it's kinda fucked up. but at the same time, they're a cute accessory. personally i probably wouldn't spend 15 usd on one, but i can't really blame others for doing that.

maybe it's just the fact that it's yubico itself doing it. i wouldn't have the same reaction if it was an etsy seller or something like that decal i mentioned. and aeropress is kind of a different kind of company, coffee is for enjoyment, it's already vain.

@poni i feel like having more than one key isn't all that common? and like, the traditional solution is keychain accessories.. you can buy those anywhere and likely for cheaper!

random people in github comments arguing about whether an eu-based vpn could inject age verification/kyc http headers into outgoing connections, and one of their proposals is standardizing an extension to clienthello modifiable by dpi, so that your vpn can add identifying information onto your tls-encrypted requests 😰

@es0mhi @WPalant eh, everyone in the activist circles (like, the ones that go outside and try to change things) that i've seen, talks about the importance of self-care (and mutual care as well), cause otherwise those organizations fall apart.

the other thing is, when you talk to people, their first reaction is always emotional. if you want to get people to think, you have to make them feel like you respect them. as in, whatever it takes, even if you actually don't. otherwise you're wasting energy. and it's really hard to appear respectful if you're exhausted and don't let yourself rest? tired people are easily irritated and can't think rationally.

and the last thing, on fedi, you're preaching to the choir, one more political post is not going to change anyone's mind here or cause them to act—especially if the first thing they notice is the lack of a cw. not following community guidelines kind of overshadows whatever you're trying to say (like it would in any other community).

saying this as someone who used to have CWs auto-expand cause i don't like them or having to click on every post (but phanpy doesn't have this feature). just, like, what's the point in wasting your energy on this. social media in general is kind of a trap where it can feel like you're doing something to change the world, while having literally no actual effect on it. and the cw wars, it just makes everyone involved more tired and angry.

i just now realized that the reason fedi is full of germans is that they really like federation. bundestag, bundesregierung, bundesliga, bundeswehr, bundesuniversum..

@poni yeah you have to change it each time you switch to another language, but like it's really hard in both akkoma fe and phanpy, i wish i could manually set the list of language displayed in the dropdown in the compose box

and yeah idk what about multilanguage posts

@poni mastodon will show a translate button only if the language doesn't match yours, there doesn't seem to be an option to manually call the translate 😭

but okay it does seem to autodetect the language in case the tag is wrong. but if you want a translate button to show up for everyone except for the people that speak czech, you have to specify czech. also i'm not sure if it's used for filtering posts on the federated timeline?

i've been trying to use post language tags correctly but honestly the whole fedi ecosystem goes against it and it's also against the way humans talk and i think the real problem is mastodon and the fact that it trusts those stupid tags. it should detect the language instead. and its autotranslate feature should allow the user to translate anything into anything, with auto -> ui language being the default, but overridable setting.
