@ww @wizard >single-device only
e2ee is device to device this makes perfect sense
>there's no backup
good thing
>silently not delivering the messages is basically as bad as a messenger can get.
disagree tbh
multi-device, gc, cross-signing, key disy all this is hurting the e2ee and turning it into near fake security so good to go away with

@mja @wizard > literally as featureful
except they're single-device only, there's no backup, and if someone reinstalls telegram, you have no way of knowing that the messages you sent in your old secret chat with them aren't getting delivered. which silently not delivering the messages is basically as bad as a messenger can get.
and from the tech (and ux) standpoint, the hard part of e2ee is key distribution and cross-signing, which is necessary for multi-device access, group chats and such. telegram just... refused to do the hard work and stopped at the bare minimum, because secret chats mostly exist for marketing purposes only.

@wizard people not using them is not a fault on telegrams part. and theyre literally just as featureful as normal chats except, yknow, theyre secure. they dont do any of that security drawback bullshit other platforms do they just make clear the limitations needed for security and leave you to that. thats a good thing id say

@mja or it would be if anyone actually used secret chats. or probably not, those kinda suck
