@ww i would imagine that a lack of education, freedom of speech / worship, and the general brutality of their daily lives probably lent itself to a different type of humor.
i'd imagine that it's difficult to joke about human rights when they weren't established yet, or things like morality when doing so would go against religious teachings.

@wizard @ww At least in the case of morality, it can and was joked about just about everywhere in premodern literature. Something like the decameron, a lot of stuff in it nearly borders on sacrilege.
