@badnetmask@hachyderm.io that is a good question

I did it over years of both reading best practices, common tools and deploying it at work and at home

I probably learned more with the home cluster

I have some options as a result, mostly on the scale and what technologies to use and what to avoid

Not knowing docker might be a downside because docker is a less complicated way of running containers so you don't have that basis to fall back on for examples

@badnetmask@hachyderm.io the G (vs pro/GE) APUs look pretty good but they lack ECC which may not matter to some

@badnetmask@hachyderm.io lower power, decent core count, simple architecture (no P/E cores to cause weird edge cases), integrated GPU, and the AI thingy might be supported by Frigate NVR eventually?

There is a comparable Intel core ultra but that is Intel(-) and the P/E core mix might cause issues

Trying to convince my dad to agree to upgrade his home server

Partly because the current one has a confusing mix of weird old drives

Partly so I can install a 1-node (failure domain: OSD) rook/Ceph cluster to make off-site backups easier :neocat_floof_angel:

Briefly looked at Forgejo actions, then backed away when I saw it required docker-in-docker

    New docker hub rate limits!

    https://docs.docker.com/docker-hub/usage/

10/hr for a single IP if unauthenticated

    40/hr if logged in

That is a massive reduction and can easily prevent even some smaller setups from deploying smoothly

@badnetmask@hachyderm.io it should update the MR

Can be an issue with apps that need strict upgrade paths

@badnetmask@hachyderm.io oh it can create two MRs if there is a major update and you have the full version tagged

@badnetmask@hachyderm.io so how does it actually deploy the docker-compose changes after the renovate MR is merged?

So I was just at afternoon tea with some friends from work. One friend told how last week a co-worker took him aside and suggested he never mention the existence of his boyfriend at work.

    Holy fuck.

@badnetmask@hachyderm.io renovate is nice either way, but how are you deploying from git to docker compose?

@badnetmask@hachyderm.io I'd say stick to what you like or are interested in

I like my Forgejo+argo+renovate way of managing applications on Kubernetes but it also depends on your environment, how many applications and how many hosts. It also really depends on what you want to learn
