#UNRWA / No evidence from Israel to back UNRWA accusations, says EU humanitarian chief

#IsraelHamasWar / The number of fatalities in Gaza is likely three times higher than the official figure (Dr. Martin Wein)

Based on global models, a reasonable estimate is that the true death toll in #Gaza already exceeds the official figure by at least 3 times, so likely over 90,000. The long-term effects of malnutrition, disease, trauma and devastation will drive the excess mortality much higher in the coming months.

Dr. Wein is suggesting that the official tally only counts those directly killed in the attacks, not the much larger excess mortality from secondary causes related to the disaster. This underestimate serves Israeli and Western interests by making the humanitarian catastrophe and crimes committed in Gaza appear smaller.

#Hamas has an interest in keeping official casualty figures in Gaza relatively low for political reasons, and has undercounted victims since the start of the war.

According to Dr. Wein, Hamas is manipulating the death toll numbers in three key ways:

1. Not counting Gazans killed or captured inside Israel during the October 7 attack

2. Categorizing many dead buried in rubble as "missing" rather than deceased

3. Undercounting wounded who died of infections, as well as starvation deaths

#MediaBias / The Rise of Authoritarian Journalism in #France

In French newsrooms and radio studios, unconditional support for #Israel is the norm and part of a wider lurch to the right.

[…] The media endorses, without fact-checking or perspective, most of the narratives from the Israeli government and army, whose spokespeople mostly speak fluent English and know the journalistic codes of the target audience. Any information from Hamas, meanwhile, including the number of victims, is treated with skepticism. The media don’t just pick up the IDF’s numerous fake news stories (the 40 “beheaded babies,” the 20 burned and executed children, the newborn put in an oven, the shot and disemboweled pregnant woman, the Hamas command center under the Al-Shifa hospital, etc.) whose subsequent denial receives less attention and has less impact than the sensational stories that preceded it. It’s the official Israeli core narrative that the French media retail: The army of “the only democracy in the Middle East” has the mission of destroying an inhuman monster that has melted into the Gazan population; so Hamas bears primary responsibility for all victims of the conflict.

Are there bad weeds within the Arab society in Israel #Unfortunately, yes, but they are a minority and must be dealt with zero tolerance. They have no place among us.

In 2019, he claimed Haaretz liberal daily newspaper is "a newspaper owned by a family that supported the #Nazi regime", referring to the Haaretz Group selling a 25% stake to German publisher M. DuMont Schauberg (2006-2011).
