That being said, they do make this note in the article:
"Some of the threat can be mitigated by using VPNs, but this remedy has all the usual drawbacks that come with them. For one, VPNs are notorious for leaking metadata, DNS queries, and other traffic that can be useful to attackers, making the protection limited. And for another, finding a reputable and trustworthy VPN provider has historically proven to be vexingly difficult, though things have improved more recently. Ultimately, a VPN shouldn’t be regarded as much more than a bandage."
@skinnylatte I remember learning about it in Mycology and then the first time I saw it as a cultural reference was watching 대장금 (Jewel in the Palace) with my partner. IIRC, they described it in that show as a poor caterpillar that starts its life as a bug and ends it as a mushroom.
@thomasfuchs I thought the translucent plastic bit originated with landline phones (at least I distinctly remember one from the show Clarissa Explains it All)
@thomasfuchs Her work is incredible! I used to have both of her Switched on Bach albums, back when they were abundant in used record stores (early naughties). I regret letting go of them because they aren't so easy to find any more :(
@skinnylatte lol I did that when I was in grad school and now I'm trapped forever 😭. I had a brief period where I attempted a markdown version, but despaired because it always ended up swinging back toward LaTeX.
@skinnylatte there was a couple of months where I was working remotely for a Uni in London from South Korea (I was helping out with family things). I would do errands and chores in the morning and my workday was 12 to 8-ish. I could do deep work in the first five hours and respond to fires/meetings in the last three. There were a couple of times where someone scheduled meetings for 1PM and I'm just like... -_-
It was nice to slam the laptop shut at the end of the day and go have Korean bbq with my partner, though.
@skinnylatte both of their shows are on regular rotation in our house. We even have the Solitary Gourmet soundtrack and put it on when we are making food for friends.
@skinnylatte@CoastalCoasting I would look for something from Marmot. They make some pretty durable shells. Their GoreTex stuff is going to last longer, but the others will do in a pinch. Usually around this area, all you need is a sweater with the rain shell.
