Cached US Kindle giveaway: 10 copies of Familiar Spirits (Twilight Hollow Witchy Cozy Mysteries Book 1) by Sara Christene, which I have but have not read, since I just got the copy right now. If you read it let me know what you think!
I got it because it was on sale, and of course "cozy fantasy" is a big thing right now, and also there's a CGI cat on the cover.
Which, as the first book established, has something like a 50% survival rate. This particular book in the series is, I'd say, more about filling out the world -- what the people in the magical society are like, what Our Protagonist is like, the importance of social circles, and so forth. (The third book turns the entire series into a retelling of a classic story and I was stunned when I realized that.)
This series is so good that I am comfortable giving out the middle one -- if you haven't read it, I *strongly* recommend going out and getting A DEADLY EDUCATION (which is about €4.50 right now, I think) so you can read this one. And then get the third one.
*Please* share this giveaway any way you can, because the UK/IE books are very hard for me to get out enough. Not enough UK/IE followers, I presume, as opposed to any inherent mistrust of free books. 😄
UK/IE Kindle giveaway: 10 copies of @naominovik's The Last Graduate (The Scholomance Book 2). As the title says, it's the 2nd book in a trilogy. Note that these require an amazon.co.uk Kindle account!
This series is, well, fantastic of course since it's a fantasy, but it is also *stunning*. The first book gives us a wizard school that is clearly evil by design. This book follows up on that and gets Our Hero to graduation.
Cached US Kindle giveaway: 6 copies of @nkjemisin's The Fifth Season (The Broken Earth Book 1), which didn't win nearly enough awards (even though it won all of them). To say it's powerful would be an understatement, a failing of my ability to articulate thoughts into words. Ironically, *not* a problem Jemisin has. There are 2 sequels to this, equally as good. If you haven't read it, you should; if you have read it, find someone who hasn't and get them to read it.
Cached US Kindle giveaway: 6 copies of L.E. Modesitt's The Magic of Recluce, which I like a lot. Weirdly, the parts I liked the most were when Our Protagonist was working on carpentry, which went into details and, for some reason, was comforting. It's also got an unusual magic system, and Our Protagonist is not too bright, although part of that was people deliberately keeping him ignorant.
I didn't care for the sequels. But liked this one a lot.
@Antiqueight The one I think of as convenient is the setup we had in Beaverton, with an August smart lock controlling a deadbolt. The august attached to the inside meant that locking and unlocking was done by just turning a large circle, and it could lock automatically. And, of course, unlock using my iPhone.
I know I can get an inside knob for the locking, so I don't have to rely on a key to open the door, but I also want all the rest, including automatic locking.
Anyone have any experience with smart (or "smart") mortise locks? (While I have some good uses for phone-controlled ones, I admit mostly I just want a keypad for cleaning people, the ability to auto-lock, and ideally not have to have a damned key to open from the inside.)
