FWIW I'm not a lawyer and I'm not recommending that you do this. 😄 Even if companies have no legal standing on copyright, their legal team will try it. It *will* cost you money.

But man, oh man, I'm gonna have popcorn ready for when someone inevitably pulls this move.

It'll be interesting to see what happens when a company pisses off an employee to the point where that person creates a public repo containing all the company's AI-generated code. I guarantee what's AI-generated and what's human-written isn't called out anywhere in the code, meaning the entire codebase becomes public domain.

While the company may have recourse based on the employment agreement (which varies in enforceability by state), I doubt there'd be any on the basis of copyright.

If you use AI-generated code, you currently cannot claim copyright on it in the US. If you fail to disclose/disclaim exactly which parts were not written by a human, you forfeit your copyright claim on *the entire codebase*.

This means copyright notices and even licenses folks are putting on their vibe-coded GitHub repos are unenforceable. The AI-generated code, and possibly the whole project, becomes public domain.

This post by Bruce Schneier contains so many thoughtful soundbites:

    > The question is not simply whether copyright law applies to AI. It is why the law appears to operate so differently depending on who is doing the extracting and for what purpose.

    > Like the early internet, AI is often described as a democratizing force. But also like the internet, AI’s current trajectory suggests something closer to consolidation.

@whitequark Having never had to deal with XSLT (which sounds like a good thing, if I'm reading the internet correctly), the specific tech they're getting rid of doesn't seem like a big deal.

The precedent it sets is, though. The ad company with the browser monopoly being able to unilaterally decide what tech is and is not part of the web is a bit concerning.

@minimalparts I'm thoroughly interested in this. Have any of these presentations been recorded in a place we can watch online? Happy to pay to access it if needed.

My interest comes from also often having to respond to overenthusiastic people who don't understand the tech, both at work and outside of it. I'm often unsuccessful in convincing folks it's not the panacea they desperately want it to be, so I would love to see and hear how you present it.

How do I raise the file-upload size limit in my Mastodon instance? Seems like every time I upload a screenshot I have to manually resize it several times to get it down below whatever limit it uses — seems like 1MB?

I want to be able to upload the image no matter how big it is. The server can deal with it.

People are often like "You should just ask for an accommodation. They *have* to do it! It's the law!". I really wish it worked that way.

    > Among all respondents who requested an accommodation, nearly 1 in 4 [23%] said they lost their job or were demoted after asking.

@evan @jerome @JasonPester @Gargron Apparently at least one DM showed up on their site. Not sure if that was due to a bug or an exploit.

@evan I do understand all this. What I thought you were getting at in the original post was along the lines of sending it over as part of the initial activity. That’s what I didn’t understand.

But it sounds like you’re talking about pulling it from the sender rather than pushing to the receiver? Or does that distinction matter here?

@evan To be clear, I do know how ActivityPub works. 🙂 I’ve implemented it a couple times, one of which was a proof of concept for solving the “server migration problem” that people often associate with AP. Thread here:

@evan Yeah, that’s what I was asking. When you say “private data”, do you mean attachments sent via DM? IIRC you mentioned a bit ago you were working on something for that, but I’m not sure if these two things are related.

@evan What are the reasons behind transferring the data to the receiving server at all rather than linking to it?

Honest question, I’ve never been a fan of Mastodon downloading images and videos from other servers, but I recognize I don’t know all the tradeoffs of doing it one way vs the other. I only see how it impacts my hosting bill.

@thomasfuchs There was a period where I'd hear people say something was "a web standard" as soon as it landed in Chrome, even if it was still in early stages.

I don't hear it much these days, but I've also been less exposed to front-end things the past few years, so I don't know if it's still as prevalent.

I learned more about GPT-based AI algorithms from this article than from literally everything else I've read about it so far combined. It implements a GPT algorithm using #PostgreSQL.
