Prior to Mastodon and the fediverse if you wanted to create a real and viable social media platform it would cost you millions.

Mastodon being well developed product that it is (thanks to @Gargron ) really and truly gives news orgs the power to run their own social site for hundreds to thousands of dollars, not millions.

The SMART orgs like @politico , @TheConversationUS, @texastribune , @texastribune and countless others took the risk made the jump and will benefit greatly because of it.

#Journalism orgs and news outlets are squandering a real opportunity when they don't embrace #Mastodon and the #fediverse

- Launch your own instances

- Launch instances for the communities you serve

- Promote the hell out of them

Do that and you take a great leap into reclaiming the role of publisher and caretaker of the public record.

There a few of us that manage growing networks of #mastodon servers, Examples: @ruud, @stux, myself.

I don't know about others but I find it tedious and inefficient to have multiple admin/siteowner accounts.

I would much prefer to have a single admin account that I could use across multiple instances.

There are entirely way too many cybersquatters masquerading as real legitimate versions of news outlets.

Is ANYONE running that handle actually employed by NPR and does NPR know you're using their brand?

Leaving out the whole issues trust and ethics ethics, of which there are many...

Tons of downside. for the public, journalism, the fediverse and NPR.

There are at least 5 other NPR accounts none of them official.

But hey let's just impersonate anyone and if asked just turn over the domain.

Want to break trust on Mastodon... particularly for news and journalism outlets... this is how you do it.
