They showed why 1/2" hardware cloth isn't enough - even though a lot of people install it instead of the smaller mesh... they used a baby rattler, about 2 weeks old, to show how easily they squeeze through a half-inch hole.

I also had to make a second gate lined with cloth, making sure there aren't any gaps anywhere around it larger than about 1/4 inch, and it is buried into the ground about 6 inches. There is a Phoenix-based business (they do rattlesnake removals and snake fence installation) that posts a lot of YouTube videos, one of them explains the requirements of a truly snake proof fence.
