@tokyo_0@RolloTreadway was that just the glitch-soc fork's fulltext search and is it still in use there then? I think that's how it used to work on this instance too before the official Mastodon implementation rolled out.
@youronlyone what about the other way around, how could a Bluesky user follow someone on the fediverse if federation is enabled and this starts working in production one day?
@darnell I don't believe for a second that Instagram or even FB not joining the fediverse is about technical unfeasiblity. Sure, it might be a lot of work but at the end of the day the main reason is Zuck just doesn't see how it would benefit him to open them up for competition that way. Meta was built on walled gardens.
I'm cautiously positive about Threads being a good thing for the wider fediverse but we can never forget Meta is absolutely not a company that is in it for the greater good, only for their own direct benefit. They will drop ActivityPub the second it suits them better than being a part of it.
My hope is just that that moment will never come and threads either does not eclipse the rest of it or withers away eventually after having helped the #fediverse grow.
@feditips well, I think discoverability is important and one way to make it happen is that a plugin like this offers ways to show visitors they can interact via ActivityPub. Seems like the latest version does already have that part covered per what @pfefferle said.
An even better way might be to have this in the browser in a similar way to how you used to see the RSS icon on the browser address bar at least in Firefox back when RSS was in vogue and how the Streetpass extension does it (https://streetpass.social/) but I doubt we are going to see a (or maybe rather the) major browser support this as a built-in feature anytime soon.
@feditips@pfefferle it is a good effort but I checked a few installations running this and it seems to be completely invisible on all I saw, you just have to somehow be able to know you can search for the account of a user on the fediverse... I guess it would be quite useful to have some kind of visible UI elements that get enabled with it as well.
