@evan asking mobile providers to give a fediverse account automatically seems pretty arbitrary. Why should I want them to do it anymore than my grocery store along with a loyalty card? Or my bank? Or the electric utility?

Something like the post office or my local municipality would make more sense to me.

Not that my cell telco shouldn't do this, but I don't see the value prop for either cell subscribers or the company themselves.

Whew! That was fast. We just got the all-clear in the city. The missile routes must be clearer now or the air defenses must have taken them out. I heard only one muffled boom. Back to studying.

You're asleep. We're currently under sustained attack by cruise missiles. An hour and a half so far. No word on strikes yet. The ones headed to Kyiv should arrive in 30-40 minutes. We hope air defenses will be effective. The missiles are launched by Tu-95s over the Caspian Sea. That's a long way. Unnerving that cruise missiles can fly so far.

They just look very wrong to me ...

I have a lot more sympathy for someone like Brandi who is trying to build a career and dealing with the reality of all the other journalists happily hanging at the nazi bar.

@evan It's an interesting question to think thru -- lots of complications that weren't obvious to me at first read.

Of course, I strongly agree that the people who live somewhere should have a voice in how their local government is run.

And now, how are "residents" defined? Is it based on property? Paying rent? How is this tracked ? Do all residents have to register with the municipality? How does it relate to immigration status? Is there a voting age? Can you be a resident of multiple cities?

This Canadian wildfire situation is unbelievable. And tragic.
2/3 of the total population of the Northwest Territories in the process of being evacuated.
And now Kelowna, a city the size of Boulder CO, facing evacuation.

I just can't imagine ...
