Duncan (duncan1n1@ieji.de)'s status on Friday, 23-Feb-2024 22:10:06 JST Duncan @SolSoCoG Update: I have given up on reporting the spam messages after receiving and reporting dozens of them daily for many days in a row. I will start to ignore them. I suspect most people are ignoring them now. We need an automated solution that doesn’t require user reporting the spam messages.

Duncan (duncan1n1@ieji.de)'s status on Monday, 19-Feb-2024 21:08:48 JST Duncan @SolSoCoG I think temporarily muting repeatedly offending instances is unavoidable.
My two cents on this is:
This shouldn’t result in a permanent suspension of an instance unless the spamming issue persists on a subset of instances
Solely relying on user reporting spam is not good enough. If a user received 2 spam messages, they will likely report them all. But if a user received 2000 spam messages in a day, it’s not realistic to expect anyone to report them all.

Duncan (duncan1n1@ieji.de)'s status on Friday, 15-Dec-2023 02:27:58 JST Duncan @SolSoCoG I understand your concern. However, I believe Meta will not use their own IPs if they don't want to have the mass data collection activities associated with them. Is a whitelist-based approach the cost worth paying for? I highly doubt about it.
If doing something degrades user experience (unable to interact with some users) but is ineffective at defending against mass data collection, it’s really the worst of both worlds. It perhaps isn’t a good approach and needs to be reconsidered. -

Duncan (duncan1n1@ieji.de)'s status on Thursday, 14-Dec-2023 20:11:48 JST Duncan @SolSoCoG I would rather prefer the site do not take a stand on this issue, and let the user decide whether they want to block another site.
Personally, I treat anything and everything I put on social media sites as public, and I would like to keep all my posts accessible by anyone else, including Meta products‘ users.
Technically, blocking Threads does not improve privacy. If Meta wants to collect data, all they have to do is to create a crawler pretending to be a mastodon instance.
