   Now it gets interesting. Thread starts limited federation. Some don't care, some suspend, others suspend and ip ban their ranges.

   I decided to do the latter, so they simply can't gather data from here in an easy way.

   While I strongly advocate for an open federation policy and despise blocklists, I also care for big privacy and data security issues, don't want them to start doing weird profiling crap and what not with our data.

     @SolSoCoG I would rather prefer the site do not take a stand on this issue, and let the user decide whether they want to block another site.

     Personally, I treat anything and everything I put on social media sites as public, and I would like to keep all my posts accessible by anyone else, including Meta products‘ users.

     Technically, blocking Threads does not improve privacy. If Meta wants to collect data, all they have to do is to create a crawler pretending to be a mastodon instance.

     @SolSoCoG I appreciate your position on this. I pointed out in a different reply that Microsoft previously engaged an open platform (the web) and worked hard to corrupt it. There's no evidence Facebook/Meta won't do the something similar with ActivityPub.

     @duncan1n1 I also get your standpoint, but I believe it is only beneficial to close the doors and try to keep them as tightly shut as technically possible for the prime evil :schmusekadser:. Well they have to use an ip out of their ranges at least to scrape :tom_scott:

     @SolSoCoG I understand your concern. However, I believe Meta will not use their own IPs if they don't want to have the mass data collection activities associated with them. Is a whitelist-based approach the cost worth paying for? I highly doubt about it.
     If doing something degrades user experience (unable to interact with some users) but is ineffective at defending against mass data collection, it’s really the worst of both worlds. It perhaps isn’t a good approach and needs to be reconsidered.
