@RickiTarr We sold our house 7-8 months ago and bought a (secondhand) SUV and caravan. My wife, my cat, and I are travelling Australia—we’re about 6 weeks into a 12-month stint in Tasmania, then we’ll head back to the mainland.
Pros: It really is a beautiful place, if a bit unforgiving. If you get sick of one spot, move onto the next. (Also, you don’t realise how stressful owning/renting a house is till you don’t have one.) (1/4)
@strypey@ixi After COVID lockdowns lifted, my wife and I ventured into Brisbane for a day out on the ferry. Like most Australians at the time we’d spent weeks or months discouraged from handling cash. (I still rarely carry it.)
Shortly after we debarked, a homeless man asked us for change. I watched him beg dozens of people as we waited for a bus, none of whom had anything to give. It was heartbreaking.
He couldn’t choose to exclude himself from the cash economy.
