Today's literal Bug of the Day is this dragonfly I spotted near a pond at a botanical garden last week.
This looks to be a species of skimmer (Libellulidae family), possibly a Blue Dasher.

Was thinking about the classic Italian film L'Eclisse recently. Haven't seen it in years, but it's one of my favorites from Antonioni.
It came out in 1962 and it's about attractive rich people in Italy, but I think it really nails the alienation a lot of people feel in society nowadays, especially when it comes to dating and relationships. I think it was really ahead of its time. Or at least, we find ourselves back in a period where these kinds of themes have become incredibly relevant again.
A lot of cinema out of Europe from the late 50s into the 60s examined this kind of existential dread. It was very much in fashion. Then it became passe, especially through the lens of this gay nihilism that has crept up in recent years. Everything has to be insincere and irreverent, people revel in the most shallow fantasies of life and have become miserable. People have thrown themselves into the kind of self-centered pursuits the film examines.
I think we're starting to find ourselves on the downswing of all of this stuff. I hope this kind of art returns. It might be back and I've just been missing it. Thinking deeply about this kind of art was something I used to do and it was a very enriching part of my life. -
