It came out in 1962 and it's about attractive rich people in Italy, but I think it really nails the alienation a lot of people feel in society nowadays, especially when it comes to dating and relationships. I think it was really ahead of its time. Or at least, we find ourselves back in a period where these kinds of themes have become incredibly relevant again.
A lot of cinema out of Europe from the late 50s into the 60s examined this kind of existential dread. It was very much in fashion. Then it became passe, especially through the lens of this gay nihilism that has crept up in recent years. Everything has to be insincere and irreverent, people revel in the most shallow fantasies of life and have become miserable. People have thrown themselves into the kind of self-centered pursuits the film examines.
I think we're starting to find ourselves on the downswing of all of this stuff. I hope this kind of art returns. It might be back and I've just been missing it. Thinking deeply about this kind of art was something I used to do and it was a very enriching part of my life.
@Squadalah_Man Funniest thing is the news telling people where the nearest fallout shelters are, implying Iran HAS nukes and might bomb the U.S., despite the U.S. bombing them ostensibly to take out nuclear development sites.
It's like if you stop and think about this for 2 seconds you realize it's the most retarded shit ever
The funniest part is, it's not even working on young people who aren't old enough to remember it from 20 years ago. It's working on the same people that were blatantly duped last time.
