Three years after sanctions were imposed on Russia due to the invasion of Ukraine, Moscow’s food prices have approached those in New York, and in some cases, even surpassed them. This is reported by the channel We Can Explain, which compared the cost of products at the New York Walmart and Moscow's Auchan.
At the same time, the average salary in New York, according to official statistics, is 4.3 times higher than in the Russian capital. To compare prices, the official exchange rate of the Central Bank of the Russian Federation as of April 10 was used—86 rubles 9 kopecks per US dollar. Additionally, the usual American pounds were converted into kilograms (1 kg = 2.2 pounds). Prices are as of April 15.
Moscow outpaced the American metropolis in prices for fish, cheese, milk, and some vegetables. For instance, a litre of Avida milk with 3.2% fat content costs nearly 100 rubles (900 ml - 90 rubles), while the American brand Great Value milk with added vitamin D costs 83 rubles per litre. Brest-Litovsk Cheddar cheese in Moscow costs 209 rubles on sale (284 rubles w/o a discount) for 200 grams, while the Great Value version costs 193 rubles for 226 grams, the larger quantity is cheaper.
Frozen Tast Art trout fillet costs 980 rubles for 450 g, whereas the same fillet at Walmart is priced at 909 rubles for the same volume. Cucumbers in Auchan are priced at 220 rubles for 600 g, which works out to about 370 rubles per kilogram. In New York, they cost 349 rubles per kilogram. Tomatoes in Moscow are priced at a minimum of 350 rubles per kilogram, while Walmart offers them for just 186 rubles.
However, not all products in New York are cheaper. For example, Gala apples in Moscow’s Auchan are 160 rubles per kilogram, whereas in Walmart, they cost 233 rubles. Chicken drumsticks under the Every Day brand at Auchan are 270 rubles per kilogram, while in New York, the same cost is 392 rubles. A 450 g pack of Barilla spaghetti costs 110 rubles in Moscow, while in New York, it's priced at 158 rubles. Potatoes in Moscow cost 70 rubles per kilogram, while in New York, they are 109 rubles.
Despite these price comparisons, the difference in earnings between the two cities remains significant. According to Rosstat, the average salary in Moscow in January was 156.3 thousand rubles before taxes, or approximately 136 thousand rubles “take-home”. According to the US Census Bureau, the average annual income of a New York resident is $104.8 thousand, which after taxes is about $80.7 thousand, or 579 thousand rubles per month ($6,700).
Perun discusses how rising global tensions highlight a munitions shortage, as weapon systems grow more advanced and expensive. NATO may manage stockpiles, but Russia’s reliance on North Korea shows supply struggles. Rising costs and slow production, especially for missiles, create a dilemma: having enough stockpiles for prolonged conflicts without breaking the budget. Militaries are exploring cheaper, smaller munitions and mixed strategies to balance cost and production.
I hope so. But we'll see if we can become members or just have closer economic and military ties. Mark Carney is moving in that direction. But one of our first steps will be to tear down the stupid trade barriers between our provinces and territories. But talks with the EU have already begun. 🤗
Scania... 💕 It's another name for Skåne, the Swedish county where I grew up. Scania AB and AB Volvo both make high quality trucks and buses. AB Volvo is still Swedish, but Volvo Cars is owned by China's Geely. Ford, bought and then sold the car division to Geely.
Since SAAB Automobile (not to be confused with all the other great stuff they still do) is no more, I'd like to ask you what year/model this is. It looks to be in tiptop shape!
Inflation is down because he "convinced" the Saudis to dump more oil on the world market. And Turkey, Brazil and South Korea are all ripping off the US by selling them eggs.
Tesla’s Cybertruck is struggling, with $200M in unsold inventory and a 32.5% sales drop early in 2025. Despite being the top-selling electric truck in 2024, only 39,000 units sold... far below Musk’s 250K goal. Recalls, falling resale values, and quality issues have worsened the situation. Notably, Tesla won’t accept Cybertrucks as trade-ins, leaving owners stuck with rapidly depreciating, hard-to-sell vehicles.
