The right-wing has always been ignorant, bigoted, and cruel. But this new era of fascist right-wing politics just enthusiastically embraces not knowing a single thing about history or reality as if they couldn't be prouder.

To resist and survive fascism you must have a moral compass that does not need alignment, approval, or acceptance from the broader society and culture. You must be able to stand alone against fascism even in a society that becomes entirely dominated by fascism.

International and US law is clear: troops must obey lawful orders ONLY.

An unlawful order is not binding, and following it can itself be criminal. US doctrine and practice reject “just following orders” if the soldier knew or should have known act was unlawful.

The oath in the US is to the Constitution, not to blindly obey leaders. As the Law of War Manual says:

"members of the armed forces are bound to obey only the lawful orders"

Trump is ordering the military to kill people in Portland who resist fascism. Those are unlawful orders and every soldier has a legal obligation to refuse them. They swear an oath to the constitution not the president.

Soldiers have a duty to disobey orders that are unlawful. It is not insubordination to do so, it is a constitutionally mandated act and an act of courage. Troops must not harm civilians, doing so is illegal and they know it. Remember the My Lai Massacre and the Nuremberg Trials.

No, we do not need to make men more comfortable with expressing toxic masculinity in order to prevent them from becoming Nazis, we need to dismantle it along with all the other cultural expressions that have been normalized as part of the alt-right pipeline.
