This driver drove through a wooden bollard gate onto a road section that is supposed to be authorized UC Davis vehicles only, drove straight at me where I was walking in the center, with my bike helmet on (because I stopped to walk) then when I took a photo, stopped, reversed hard up the path yelling at me for taking a photo.

I'm sad the license plate isn't that readable. This is precisely the kind of driver we need bollards to prevent reaching people on foot.

It's analogous to all the abled cis-het white male podcast hosts whose guest lists are still ~80% abled cis-het white males from the same field as them (usually entertainment).

It's hard to take abled cis-male white dudes in Urbanism talking about how they hate any "hedging" about some people not being able to go car-free right now when I don't see anything like as big a push to talk with disabled cyclists, urbanists, takers-of-public-transit...and even disabled people who rely on cars about ableism in infrastructure & policy and HOW WE GET TO an equitable urban environment and climate solutions. #Ableism

So it's easy for me to critique, but what do I *want* to see? I want to see the mic being passed more often. I want to see disabled (and women and BIPOC and LGBTQUIA and poor and rural, etc) folks who are already on board with cycling, public transit, rail, & human-scale development being consulted by the largely hegemonic folks running various orgs and elevated (not just pumped for info, but given credit & given the floor in equal shares). #Ableism

Something some well-meaning abled folks do is minimize disability. Instead of just letting the disabled friend/student/peer speak of how they're experiencing things, they'll quickly interrupt with "everyone's a little ____" "everyone's suffering" or "you'll overcome ___"

It's still the training of systemic ableism to short-circuit any real discussion of disability and ableism. Yes, disability is far more present than our society acknowledges, but you still needn't say "everyone's a little"

Oh, wow. I just saw a local bike shop's website that used "acoustic bike". I love that slang, but I fear that folks new to cycling and e-cycles won't get that it's a joke-y way of referring to cycles that are 100% human-powered. #BikeTooter

I wonder if Mastodonians can come up with a good enough stunt to get Last Week Tonight to make an official account here on Mastodon? #LastWeekTonight #Fediverse

I've been astounded by how many people keep tweeting given all the shitty and shittier things Musk has been doing since acquiring Twitter. Where do folks draw a line? Apparently very very far down the line.

"Ban cars" has to be matched by equal or even more zeal to make things accessible. It just has to be.

Because "ban cars" is not the same as "most people can go without cars". It is ableist to say "ban cars" before you've shown equal ire for inaccessibility. And, frankly, I haven't seen that from the "ban cars" crowd. So you sound like "fuck disabled people" when you say that. #Ableism #Accessibility

I think most abled people are physically capable of riding cycles and doing a lot of what they currently use a car for. And we can increase the % of folks doing so. We can fight for increased public transit and going fare-free. But unless you are listening to disabled ppl, involving disabled ppl, co-leading with disabled ppl, your solutions will be ableist... It's not like pubtrans as it currently exists is accessible! If you're not joining disabled ppl in these fights, how are we to trust you?

"Ban cars" is short, catchy among a certain crowd, easy branding. But it is not only not going to persuade as many people as you want to persuade, it's telegraphing that you don't care about making shut-ins of disabled people. And I have a problem with that.

I think we need to *drastically* reduce car use. But to do this successfully and also ethically, you need to dismantle your ableism (and other systemic oppressions that affect policy objectives & how we rebuild). #Ableism #Accessibility

@aral I hope you heal swiftly and completely! And I hope you remember the things (and processes) that weren't designed so accessibly even after it's healed.

    Thanks for talking about it.

While taking my ride today, I was passed by a guy riding e-bike (full throttle, not using pedals) who saw me pedaling the cargo e-quad and yelled "I love that bike!"

    I don't think I've ever had a negative reaction to the e-quad.

@aral In "I Will Bear Witness, Volume 1" by Victor Klemperer, he notes how first books by Jewish authors were off-limits to people, then how he as a Jew was not allowed to check books out, then not allowed to read them in the Reading Room, then had bits of his personal library made verboten.

If folks keep letting fascists fash, personal libraries become unavailable as well.

So tired of the false dichotomy of "if it isn't going after the rich/corps nothing you do to reduce GHGs matters". This is horseshit. It all matters, esp this far into things.

Yes, prioritize going after the rich/corps as they're the largest contributors to GHGs, pollution, etc. But that doesn't mean we do nothing individually.

@Gargron Is there anywhere people can make one-time donations (or at least ones that are not auto-pay)? Some of us want to help, but have uneven income so it's hard to do Patreon.
