"Nyah had just graduated from 8th grade two days prior and was excited to start high school this Fall. Because of this tragedy, I will never get to see him grow up. Nyah leaves behind our mother, father, and 3 siblings. Our family moved to America nine years ago as refugees from Myanmar to find a better life safe from law enforcement killings and ethnic cleansing."

StopAsianHate will never show out for Nyah Mway because StopAsianHate seeks out inclusion into the US body politic through police protection and carceral redress against extremely nebulous and ill-defined racial "hate"
("hate" in relation to Asians has come to refer to anything from a glare to shunning to a robbery. For more see https://online.ucpress.edu/esr/article/44/2/27/118428/On-InheritancesExamining-Contemporary-Anti-Asian )
moreover, Nyah was a Burmese American child, and StopAsianHate has also implicitly relied on the racialization of victims of racial hate to be (mis)recognized as Chinese (this was most clear during the year 2020, when COVID-19 was racialized as Chinese and any Asian who could be read as Chinese would face that specific kind of racism). But it is hard, nearly impossible, for the StopAsianHate people to square these articulations of hate and hostility with execution by police, an entity they have supported in direct oppositon to "Defund the Police" and Black Lives Matter.
Utica police's execution of Nyah Mway is perhaps more evidence of the ways that Southeast Asians and SE Asian refugees in America are in fact conditionally locked out of the "model minority" status that East Asians and some South Asians enjoy -- especially if the "model minority" status is not actually a reflection of grades/test scores but a reflection of income, class position, and presupposition of criminality ("the lever through which Asian-American decriminalization obtains its social truth—vis-a-vis a self-fulfilling white social imaginary that claims to witness, and subsequently proclaims the creeping ascendance of studious, law-abiding Asian minorities— is the same cultural-political fulcrum that historically militarizes white civil society against its more ominous Black-Brown racial
antagonists and cultural pathogens" https://loneberry.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/asian-american-studies-in-age-of-prison-industrial-complex.pdf -- Children like Nyah Mway are, especially in the question of police violence, lumped into the latter and excluded from the former).
@abolisyonista absolutely!!!
@Mordantivore i can see why but i feel like this particular bill is much more about criminalizing pro-palestine organizers and re-treading/trying to reify 2020 injunctions against masks during the summer uprisings
i think that a culture of masking would have slowed this but repressive state apparatuses have been seeking to criminalize masking for a LONG time, both within and before the COVID-19 pandemic
"After the [Dakota Access] pipeline was completed and demonstrators left, North Dakota sued the federal government for more than $38 million — the cost the state claims to have spent on police and other emergency responders, and for property and environmental damage. Central to North Dakota’s complaints are the existence of anti-pipeline camps on federal land managed by the Army Corps of Engineers. The state argues that by failing to enforce trespass laws on that land, the Army Corps allowed the camps to grow to up to 8,000 people and serve as a 'safe haven' for those who participated in illegal activity during protests and caused property damage.
In an effort to prove that the federal government failed to provide sufficient support, attorneys deposed officials leading several law enforcement agencies during the protests. The depositions provide unusually detailed information about the way that federal security agencies intervene in climate and Indigenous movements.
Until the lawsuit, the existence of only one federal informant in the camps was known: Heath Harmon was working as an FBI informant when he entered into a romantic relationship with water protector Red Fawn Fallis. A judge eventually sentenced Fallis to nearly five years in prison after a gun went off when she was tackled by police during a protest. The gun belonged to Harmon."

"We the Gainer family, are humbly asking for your financial support for our dear loved one, Ryan Gainer's funeral expenses.
Ryan was a 15-year-old Autistic teenager whose life was taken far too soon at the hands of the San Bernardino Sheriff Deputies. We are lost navigating this traumatic experience; battling feelings of devastation and unimaginable despair. Ryan was a great kid, our world; he didn’t deserve this!
In addition to processing the abruptness of the situation, we find ourselves in a finacial hardship and are calling on our community for help. Ryan was very active in our community; involving himself with tutoring kids afterschool, assisting with robotics programs, community clean up and so much more. He was a super intelligent, kind, generous, respectable, thoughtful, funny, goofy, charismatic person, who always saw the good in people. Ryan wanted to be a mechanical engineer and run track for Oregon State University one day; our hearts continue to break at the thought of him being robbed of his bright future.
All donations will help cover the cost of the burial and funeral expenses. Your generosity is appreciated but your prayers are essential and valued.
Thank you for helping in this difficult and challenging time, for taking the time to visit this page, and for sharing Ryan's story. "

@abolisyonista echoing everyone saying how fucked this is but i also cannot get over the fucking cut-out flowers on the signs :helpme: as if that dulls or lessens the threat of violence itself
"While journalists and liberals are fond of promulgating the notion that San Francisco's long history of trans resistance makes the city some sort of sanctuary for trans people, we know that this resistance has been and continues to be a direct response to total assault on trans life.
...
In Frisco and beyond, a rancid fermenting barf bag full of political parties, Democratic clubs, and non-profits consistently co-opt political momentum. These parasitic organizations simultaneously transform protests and counter-protests into platforms for assimilationist demands and operate as the liberal creep that infiltrates radical spaces and metabolizes potential insurgency.
This weekend's high-profile TERF conference has mobilized people to show up to counter the transphobes—but it's not only explicit transphobia that calls for direct antagonism; it is thinly veiled, insidious, ever-present transphobic formations as well. "

"Kimberly is a kind, generous, and creative trans woman who has faced political repression, transphobia and queerphobia from guards and other prisoners alike, and survived Covid-19 while locked up. She was finally found eligible for parole and is coming home August 29. Transitioning from life behind bars to life in the free world is rife with challenges and can be extraordinarily difficult, so let's pool our resources and give Kimberly some resources to make the whole process softer and smoother. Let's show Kimberly what community looks like out here! "
@abolisyonista I saw a TikTok featuring an Asian chef extolling the virtues of the Thai banana and have seen similar videos for the ice cream banana and I’m like look i enjoy the food influencers myself but this would also! disappear and should disappear, there’s no Diaspora Food-Identity Branding that makes the banana export defensible aaaaaahh
@abolisyonista apparently the CEO of the company my dad works at in San Francisco recommended Bullshit Jobs to all the employees — I feel like there’s no limit to hypercapitalists identifying with left anything and not looking at themselves in the mirror to see that they are The Problem (whether or not this is bc there’s no material or social consequences for them doing this remains to be seen lol). It’s not even co-optation, it’s a twisted form of identification on its own runaway train
