The Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court has one clear tool with which to affect the outcome of Supreme Court cases: the CJ assigns opinions, meaning that he always selects the justice who will write for the majority. This much more than a mere administrative role. The content of an opinion, its precise wording, the overall arguments it makes - these all shape the law as much as the narrow result affirming or rejecting a lower court judgment. 3/
We know the Republican Party, especially in swing states, has explicitly been laying the groundwork to disrupt what should be a Harris win. The Democratic Party and the Harris campaign have already litigated some cases to prevent this and they are preparing for post-Election-Day litigation. The details of Roberts’ aggressive pro-Trump intervention last term makes all of this more fraught. 7/
As I and others have been saying, it may well not be enough for Harris to simply end up with the most electoral college votes, via each state’s popular vote. This is because it seems quite possible that in some states there will be county and even state level efforts to use post-election chicanery to interfere with a transfer of power to Harris. 6/
Important: U.S. eligible voters, check your registration. Some states have early deadlines for registering to vote. Other states are aggressively purging their voter rolls, so even if you think you are registered, do check to make sure. More information available at https://wapo.st/3Zon0Ox.
The cost of the effort to elect Kamala Harris is enormous. So I’ll keep beating the drum for the Mastodon for Harris fundraiser. Please boost my efforts. Every new person who learns about it may want to donate at https://secure.actblue.com/donate/mastodon-for-harris. 4/4
Now imagine that you have to professionally videoconference those weddings for hundreds of thousands more guests unable to attend in person but wanting to be involved. And this are society weddings so publicity must be arranged and funded.
I’m trying to put the costs of Harris-Walz rallies into a perspective we may be able to grasp. But it is really hard. The Harris-Walz campaign is attempting a campaign on an unprecedented scale, to meet an existential moment for American democracy. 3/
The campaign will do scores of rallies featuring Harris, Walz or both over the next 50 days. Imagine putting on 75 weddings, with thousands of guests at each one, in the space of a month and half. Think about the cost. Now imagine that the wedding party has to appear at each one and so must be transported, fed, and housed all along the way. Next imagine that these weddings have to have the best security arrangements in the world. Think about the costs…. 2/
Yesterday, I watched video of Harris speaking in NC. I’ve bookmarked Walz in Grand Rapids, MI yesterday. And now I have on in the background the run up to Harris in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania. Every one of these rallies extends the reach of the campaign and motivates staffers and volunteers on the ground. And every one is expensive. So, if you are able and have even five bucks to donate, go to https://secure.actblue.com/donate/mastodon-for-harris to donate what you can. We are helping to financing a massive operation. 1/
Good morning! Today is the day of the Harris-Trump debate. To show support for Harris, the Mastodon for Harris fundraiser is holding a Debate Matchathon, under way since last night, and running through the debate itself. Folks have put up over $6000 in potential contributions to this ladder match. Throughout today I will post the current match on offer. As each match is met, I will put the next one up. 1/ https://secure.actblue.com/donate/mastodon-for-harris
I’m cooking, with Harris in Wilkes-Barre, PA in the background. When I glance over, I see the PENNSYLVANIA FOR HARRIS-WALZ signs, and I feel energized.
I agree with @jeffjarvis about the historic significance of who is coming together to defeat Trump and to elect Harris. He writes about this at https://buzzmachine.com/2024/09/06/the-unprecedented-grand-coalition/. I would add that this is is also a moment of profound ethical significance. You either publicly support Harris in the name of using peaceful democratic means to shape our country or you are for violence and repressive, minoritarian rule.
I am learning about #FediForum because @tchambers invited me join him in hosting a session there this Saturday, about progressive organizing and the fediverse. You can get more information about Fediforum here: https://fediforum.org/
