Released and built a bunch of stuff over the last couple days. Lots of translation updates, a few bug fixes, a couple new features. Plan to do a write up tomorrow and send my last update of the year to sponsors! Then I’m out. Starting medical leave and won’t be back until maybe late January? Depends on recovery! So things will be 100% volunteer community run for a bit. Be kind and give them your support 😊🩷
Merged the sponsor progress bar branch! It’s cute and animated 🎉 Merged a fix for icon clipping in the dock. Bugfix release soon for that. Also proposed a branch for the dock to respond to reduce transparency setting: https://github.com/elementary/dock/pull/333
People continually say that there’s only one person working on elementary OS etc. my computer has been off for 14 days. Our community just pushed a new ISO to early access with fixes for big reported issues since 8.0 including a networking config issue due to a conflict with Ubuntu, flatpaks not opening in demo mode, and installer crashing with certain partition layouts. It’s maybe not obvious but these are issues that can be particularly hard to find the source of and address
I’m especially proud of the fact that we have built a community around elementary OS that is extremely empowered, has autonomy, has documented processes, and can completely operate without needing my intervention along every stage while still having plenty of accountability in the form of things like code reviews and tests.
All my thanks to everyone who works hard to make this operating system possible. I am so glad that it absolutely is not just me
One of the wildest things to me about the whole healthcare CEO assassination situation is seeing people say, “left and right [politics] are a distraction from the up and down [class] issues”
Oh god dude you’re so close. Liberals—who y’all keep calling extreme leftists for some reason—are right wing. Leftists are anti-capitalist. Like you want to cling to your right wing conservative identity so fucking bad but you hate capitalism!
The thing is, you can’t fight the class war and also hold on to your hate of marginalized people. Capitalists love having marginalized people who are forced to sell their labor at a loss. An effective labor movement requires solidarity with marginalized people. That’s the real distraction is conservatism which marginalizes and devalues the labor of queer people, bipoc, women, etc. You wanna fight the class war, you gotta drop the hate
Seeing a number of folks confused about the use of the term “Inclusive Design” and asking “Doesnt that just mean Accessibility?” Disability is one axis of exclusion but as a methodology Inclusive Design is about recognizing any and all axis of exclusion. This means considering things like tech literacy, access to high speed internet, localization, gender, race, culture. Thinking about all the ways people are excluded when we design technology
It is not supportive to say, “Well Sarah looks more like a real woman than Nancy”. All you do when you say that is hurt trans women who don’t pass and perpetuate the narrative that only women who fit a narrow white supremacist beauty standard are “real women”. This language and these stereotypes hurt all women, but they especially hurt the women you think you’re standing up for
One thing I really hate about this whole Nancy Mace shit is people who think they are being allies by saying transphobic shit. This is just lateral violence. When you say “Well Nancy Mace looks trans” you don’t hurt her you hurt trans women. You don’t fight transphobia by perpetuating it.
Also annoying is the like, “hey wouldn’t it be super funny to have a trans man out and endanger themselves by going into the women’s restroom”. I’m begging you to see trans people as people for one second please
Sarah McBride isn’t a woman because she has long hair or wears the right clothes or does her makeup the right way or because of the way her voice sounds or because she’s reached a certain level of attractiveness or because of any medical transition she may have undergone. She is a woman because she knows she is. Gatekeeping womanhood behind having a certain type of bodily appearance is flatly antifeminist.
Oh also we realized we were accidentally still shipping pulseaudio instead of pipewire oops. Fixed in the latest builds. Excited to get this release out. Lots of big new stuff
