@Gargron Happy Birthday!
@Gargron Is there a list of the various badges somewhere? I have seen a few -- social butterfly, cool-hunter, oracle, etc --and I think they are great.
@Gargron This is VERY COOL and I look forward to what you have in store for it in the future. Thank you. It was a pleasant surprise.
@cstross @vincent How would you read out a URL like: http://www.antipope.org/charlie/ ?
@vincent @cstross That's what I would say as well.
I have been hearing more and more people say "Anti Pope Dot Org Back Slash Charlie" recently and that's what baffles me.
@VeryBadLlama my wife and I started a community board game night over a decade ago in our late 40s. I have made some of the closest friends of my life from that group. It's been worth the effort.
@silverwizard from there, of the police still won't do something, it turns to filing court orders to get information from the IP holders about who had the IP at the time of access and harassment.
Good luck.
@silverwizard the method in the Forbes article uses a blog and site statistics apps to gather the IP information. Same principal.
@silverwizard here is a Forbes article (that also points to more sources) on how to do it. Beware that it isn't a quick fix, but it can work if they are persistent (and it require some legal action, which isn't always affordable). https://www.forbes.com/sites/kashmirhill/2012/09/28/how-to-bait-and-catch-the-anonymous-person-harassing-you-on-the-internet/
@silverwizard if you can host a file on a site where you can look at the access logs and then post a link to that file, you might be able to bait them into downloading the file which could give you their IP address in the access logs. A whois search for the IP address.could get you their ISP and geolocation information on the IP could get you the general area.
That's a lot of "ifs" and "coulds", though.
@cstross So our national security hinges on the fact that a midshipman wasn't wily enough to name the network along the same generic convention that already existed on the ship.
Good to know.
@Gargron That's a good tip. So you just take a tiny bit off each day for a couple of days instead of a bunch all at once?
@thomasfuchs I don't understand why people continue to take this guy seriously. These ideas are comical on their face.
@Gargron Congratulations, @dave! And congratulations also to the core engineering team!
@briankrebs Is that because of all the Threads users that follow him?
@Gargron Congratulations to you both.
@bruces In action:
@Gargron happy birthday!
@Gargron thanks for all of your hard work this year.
