In 1972, while on vacation, Stefano Mariottini, an engineer from Rome, snorkeling off the coast of Monasterace near Riace, noticed a human hand sticking out of the sand. Deciding that it was a corpse, he called the police. From the bottom of the Ionian Sea, two statues of "Warriors from Riace" were raised - ancient Greek bronze statues of the 5th Century BC.

The Windover Bog Bodies in Florida are pretty fascinating—these guys date back around 8,000 years.
They were discovered in 1982, and it's a really incredible site with the remains of 168 people buried in Windover Pond. Thanks to the peat down there, the bodies were preserved so well that scientists even found intact brain tissue in several skulls.
This amazing preservation has made it possible to do DNA testing, which is part of what makes Windover such a big deal in the world of archaeology.

The House of the Celi at Pompeii is notable for two reasons. Firstly, it is a rare example of a late Samnite dwelling dating from the 2nd Century BC.
The other notable feature is this stunning garden frescoe which has recently been restored. Depicting hunting scenes and landscapes with Egyptian themes, this victim of years of neglect and misguided restoration shines once again.

Size of the Spanish flag flown on a ship in the Battle of Trafalgar, 1805.
This trophy flag is made of wool and feels very coarse. It has the arms of Castile and León in the middle and the name of the ship on the hoist in ink: san ildefonso. The flag has holes from where it was shot, and it is frayed on the edges from when it flapped in the winds.
Size: 33ft long and 48ft high
