@feditips I also sometimes use @ihabunek's wonderful Toot TUI masto client from the terminal and appreciate the alt text greatly myself.

A side note @feditips since you write masto tips. Toot is really nice for automating posting from scripts. My @browserversiontracker and @vivaldiversiontracker are basically just short shell scripts powered by cURL to fetch information and Toot to post it.
With tools like these doing the heavy lifting simple info posting masto bots are pretty straightforward if you have basic command line skils.
You have probably written about these things before but I mention it nonetheless. 🤷🏼
@feditips Yeah I need to think about this going forward. I often have long alt text and not just because I include a full copy of written words from a screenshot. Now I am thinking about how I should order things, so that the most relevant part is near the front, so when it is too long, they'll at least get something.
Ok, yes the full alt text is present apparently. I see it when I inspect the page with dev tools but does not display in its entirety for the tooltip.
It rained a fair bit last night and Lørenskog is feeling it. I took this while I was out earlier today. #Oslo.
@sotolf Have you ever seen this picture of "Grensen 1" by the way? There is that Danish style "velociped" spelling for you (with the 'c') used in Oslo.
Here is a modern picture of the same location using Google Map's "Street View"
@sotolf See this is where billionaries miss a trick. Rather than buying a social media company and running it into the ground it would be better to buy Grensen 1 and re-open it as a velociped store.
@sotolf There is a store running that sells these bikes by the way. In Sweden. It is where I bought mine!
@sotolf To be honest, I usually do explain immediately after. I am not good at playing it cool with subtle jokes like that.
@sotolf I had never thought about the latter! 🤔 That is kind of cool and makes a lot more sense now.
@sotolf I thing I have sometimes done when I meet people and they ask about the unicycles, is that when they say something like, "Do you own a normal bike?". I reply, "I have an ordinary bike!" 😜
@sotolf It is also why search engines give image searches like this…
@sotolf It is a fun name. However it is worth noting that this name for them did not actually apear in Norway until long after they had died out from mainstream usage. They were most popular between 1870s and 1880s. However that term first appeared in a newspaper in the 1930s.
Back during their heyday they would have been called simply velociped (note the 'c' due to the stronger influence from Danish at the time).
It seems that both velosiped and veltepetter are valid now.
@sotolf I do like the fun names like Veltepetter and Penny Farthing and regularly use them.
I also sometimes call the penny an "ordinary bike".
In English these were the first contrations called "bicycles", so when modern bikes first appeared they were initially called "safety bicycles" and the penny was reffered to as an "ordinary bicycle", which is also why this link works
@kev And am I big nerd for having these on my keyring. Yes… yes I am! 🤓
@kev Yep, after the coins. Here is the flip side just for you to see "PENNY" and "FARTHING" written on them.
Time to ride
Well this is interesting from #Strava. If you set your ride as a commute they now suggest how much CO2 was saved over (presumably… a car journey!?).
I have absolutely no idea how accurate this is but the concept is at least interesting as a way to make you think about things and encourage you to do it more.
Of course even if the calculation is any good the problem with this is that I often go on massive detours on the way to and from the office because commuting is one of the highlights of my day.
What I did this morning was pretty much direct but last week for example on one of my commutes home, I unicycled probably 25km (I do not have an exact figure as I clipped off part of the route due to GPS issues).
Plus unicycles are way more energy for the same distance compared to cycling since being fixed wheel you always pedal (even downhill) plus they tend to be pretty low gearing so more revs for the same distance.
Thus actually these calculations will always be waaaay off for me in any case.
International Penny Farthing Racer. I commute via :unicycle:, 🛴, "halfbike" or :penny_farthing: because they are great fun! I also like minimalist tech: non-smartphones, unusual + old school digital watches, Slackware, Gemini/Gopher.I feel very strongly that if you use a "free service" and enjoy it you should donate to its up keep.He/him/his [cis ally 🏳️🌈]P.S.
