@dave The GNU GPL archives freedom zero just as well as the "MIT license". You can run a GNU GPL program for any reason.

The "MIT license" is one of the worst licenses for users, since they can be subjugated when a copy is made; which is the whole point of the GNU project, and the FSF

Computers in 2026, have little point. We cannot write #FreeSoftware for them, the @fsf actively hinders the #GNU project with dead beat projects like LibrePhoolery, refuses to keep basic infra structure running, blocks #GNU maintainers from talking about these issues. The FSF president @iank prefers to sit in silence and not do anything.

@adulau I would argue that you do not have to release it under the GPL; consider ./configure or Makefile.in generated GNU autoconf or GNU automake. I’m under no obligation to release the too include those (autoconf/automake, maybe not even the input files for them! Just whatever can build the program)

It is similar to being able to modify an image one would require to also distribute the graphics program for it. There is nothing in the GPL that guarantees that things will actually work for modification either.

Interesting conundrum though.
