I haven't watched the Doctor Who special (or much Who since ~Matt Smith) but I've heard progressives online complaining that the special is too on-the-nose with its messaging on Trans rights. Which makes me chuckle for a few reasons.

First, I remember how gay the new Who was when it restarted. I'm surprised anyone is surprised that Doctor Who might be didactic about sexuality or gender.

I know coffee roast levels are arbitrary and aren’t standardized between roasters or whatever,,, but I do love this “three spiders = medium” scale

It really sucks that humans invented electric cars and the first* thing we did was make them into luxury cars. Then the second thing we did was make them into big trucks and SUVs.

* I know EVs are super-old tech, but you know what I mean.

I know that EVs aren’t really a solution to the emissions caused by cars, trains would be better, driving ICE cars into the ground has a lower carbon impact, etc.

But in a world where we have EVs, it sucks that we’re doing them this way.

@ezekiel I mean, it is and it isn’t. Hummer’s EV has a battery that weighs as much as a Civic, so choosing to allot batteries to heavy/expensive cars makes battery supply more constrained. and priorities like Tesla’s 0-60 time make those batteries less efficient.

My guess is windchill doesn’t really happen in Cupertino, so they consider “feels like” to be redundant information. Not worth the visual importance of putting at the top.

It reminds me of how iPhones would (for years) interpret an out-of-operating-temperature-range hardware warning as overheating. So you’d be walking during the frigid winter and your phone would stop working, claiming to be overheated lol

I’m trying to get on the Apple Weather bandwagon (because Dark Sky will stop working soon) but dang, they just *have* to be all California about it.

Dark Sky puts the “feels like” temperature right under the actual temp. East to find. Apple Weather puts it… at the bottom of a long scroll view. It’s a pretty minor detail but it exemplifies how Apple only considers their own perspective when designing software.

I'm concerned about the load that this will place on remote servers processing the account deletion jobs. I'm planning to scale back the local Sidekiq concurrency to slow-roll the self-destruct.

That’s not really the point, or the goal.

The idea of replacing Twitter accepts the framing that the world needs a Twitter.

But maybe we should have some loftier goals? Maybe having a single platform for all short form text posts is bad, actually?

People are already/again measuring the success of Mastodon using this framing of needing to “replace Twitter”, and I totally reject it. The Fediverse has been here for years, it’s still here, it will continue to be here one day after Mastodon goes away. It’s thrumming along, and that’s a kind of success that Twitter could never have achieved.
