@annika I genuinely don't understand where the responsibility lies in a world dominated by these forces where I exist with an amount of privilege that affords me to be there while others can't & also attempt to influence the system away from an onslaught of bad actors.

I and Federico exist in the tech space with a unique connection to Apple's privacy stance around AI & the startup scene in Silicon Valley & the fediverse

All the best people I know who could help do good in tech opted out of it

@Gargron Does he owe you for being featured? I don’t understand the point.

You could have contacted him privately about that, that would have been kinder. If it’s a business issue, that would also be more professional.

You can’t not recognize that a public message from you that’s not a private mention will be seen by your mutuals, you designed the thing.

@annika Yes! Despite the obvious negatives, it’s very much a hugely popular platform and there is tons of important discussion there. That doesn’t mean I’m saying everyone should either.

Are you saying it’s not even okay to *have a conversation* about whether it’s okay? It’s not okay to even discuss the idea of the topic?

That is exactly what I mean, folks won’t even entertain the thought that someone could consider using it. That is just sticking your head in the sand.

@Gargron You could’ve taken the opportunity to demonstrate leadership for this platform, and still can now even in reply to this, but I don’t see it happening.

I tried to believe in Mastodon, and I simply don’t anymore

    @WarnerCrocker @fahrni That’s fine. I’m doing the same here.

I’m watching these communities eat themselves in real time because everybody hates Elon and can’t agree on how to operate given that he’s a fucking billionaire who can take over systems of control.

This might be it for me on this platform. This isn’t any type of leadership.

I can’t see any future where this place becomes anything better with this person in charge.

There is a conversation to be had and folks are trying to give a definitive answer.

    That’s my only point.

Was it wrong? Was it right? I don’t know, you ended the conversation.

The problem I’m having with the current discourse is everyone speaks in thought-terminating cliches.

Stop using memetic phrases to communicate your deeply-held values.

The problem is the actual complexities of our current age won’t fit into your slam dunk post, and you are attacking real humans with little grace yourselves.

You’ve let your enemy so deeply into your heart, you’ll turn on the person next to you because you aren’t able to address the real problems.

I think Shortcuts is a bigger concern and Pixelmator is still within their "getting started” window: https://matthewcassinelli.com/creative-neglect-apple-apps-six-colors/

Pixelmator going to Apple is the best possible future for them and I can't wait to see what happens.

I remember the last time Apple acquired a super-functional app and turned it into a headline feature 👀 https://www.pixelmator.com/blog/2024/11/01/a-new-home-for-pixelmator/

This weekend I noticed that Apple Intelligence Summaries made me less engaged in a group chat & unaware of the details.

People were going back and forth about a bbq & a movie, and by the end I didn’t know it wasn’t at our house and which movie they picked, because I read the summaries and skimmed the messages in the moment.

I still don't think Apple Intelligence proper is coming this summer/fall because it'll be awful.

Since Actions and Personal Context run on indexing App Intents, it'll launch mostly broken and be a horrible experience because most developers won't have adopted it yet.

I'm taking Gurman's report that we're just getting Siri updates and the rest is coming early 2025 over 9to5 (https://9to5mac.com/2024/07/24/apple-intelligence-release-date-when-to-expect-ios-18s-ai-features-to-launch/) and MacRumors (https://www.macrumors.com/2024/07/24/apple-intelligence-coming-in-later-ios-18-dev-beta/) insisting that it'll be sooner: https://www.theverge.com/2024/7/7/24193619/apple-intelligence-better-siri-ios-18-4-spring-public-launch
