Holy crap. In the EU, fuel consumption monitoring devices are required on new cars. They studied over 10% of all cars sold in 2021 and turns out they use way more fuel, and generate way more CO2, than anybody thought. Nearly a quarter more. Plug-in Hybrids do poorly too.
This means our projections about getting cars off the road for the climate crisis is hugely undercounting the effects. More rail, more e-bikes, more electric, faster.
@Noelwalling@mmasnick That is discussed in the linked post, and no it has not been “proven”. I agree they are often hostile to being studied and that’s bad, but that’s different from proven. Capitalism is a big factor behind many of the problems and the hostility for sure.
@Noelwalling@mmasnick If we were only talking about the reaction of social media companies, definitely. Independent research is at the link, and I totally agree that actual data and research is needed, not just gut feels.
@Jamesboswell@mmasnick “bullied to death *by* social media” is not fact, that’s the point. We don’t have causal data on this. We have some correlations, sometimes, and sometimes they’re reversed as discussed in the post. Of course some teens have had bad outcomes and we can find anecdotes about why some adults *think* it happened. But that’s different from facts or causal data.
I agree nonstop flood of filtered images feels like a harmful thing. But feels like is not science.
It’s popular to think use of social media by definition harms teens. But studies shows it’s not true. Per this link, there is no data to support this.
The head of Common Sense Media, which as a parent I used to think was a useful resource, is pushing falsehoods and gut feelings on this, in support of a dangerous California ballot initiative.
Where California goes on this, much of the western world follows. So worthwhile being aware of the facts on this.
I just realized the lives of four different friends are currently threatened by unusually large and destructive wildfires *in three different countries*.
But definitely we should try not to upset the dirty energy sector’s owners, and constantly compromise. Cool cool.
"What’s wanted here isn’t a civil discourse or an exchange of ideas.
What’s wanted is to agree that reality is not what it actually is, but what the person you’re dealing with says it is, which means you agree that they are the ones who get to set the terms of reality for everyone else."
@JuliusGoat has an awe-inspiring way with words and insights when evaluating Elon, or Bud Lite, or Barbie, or talking about almost anything.
🧵 1/5 If you've seen a headline about Mastodon & child abuse material (yikes!), some comments:
1. Mastodon is just software, not a company or a place, so this is like saying 'lots of child abusers use MS Office' 2. These sites appear in many blocklists and the admins of many Mastodon servers block them, so that crap never travels to your neighbourhood. 3. This is primarily in Japan. 4. Still bad, moderation and blocking are important areas to build up.

Montréal suburb Brossard has a traffic light in a school zone that defaults to red, and only turns green when an attached speed camera detects a car driving under the speed limit.
The light is on a 90-day trial, on a 2-lane residential street. Similar signals are widespread across Europe.
Before it was installed, average vehicle speeds of 40 km/h. But in the past week, average speeds have dropped to 29 km/h.
