unpopular opinion: software developers were too comfortable for too long. they didn't unionize when everybody told them to. they didn't use the time they had when they were on top to implement meaningful safeguards for their jobs. and now llms are hitting their industry like a sledgehammer and they don’t know how to fight because they never did.

i don’t say that to blame them, it’s still their bosses who are the problem. but take it as a wake up call and unionize. better late than never.

so i’ve been a technology reporter for over half a decade now and i’m kind of scared to admit this, but i still have no idea what sap actually is or does and i don’t think i want to know.

i think we should establish a new standard for deciding if a company has a monopoly on the market. if sap can name a software »sap s/4hana« and still be successful that should be considered an indicator of market failure.

yes, amd is getting better, apple silicon is impressive. but the industry trends are clear. moore’s law is over. and the efficiency gains we are getting are mostly from specialized hardware baked into the chips like neural processing units and media encoders. process shrinks won’t fix this.

the notion that the ai energy demand will be fixed by efficiency gains in the future is a borderline lie. i don’t know if you’ve noticed, but we are done with doubling efficiency every two years. and we’ve been done for quite a while. if you watch the pc space most of the performance gains come from pumping more energy into the chips. a high end gaming pc will commonly use power supplies rated for 1,000 watts or higher. consoles have increased in size because they need the cooling.

this whole x/infowars handle situation is also a reminder why i think bluesky’s username system should be adopted widely. tying the name to a domain that you actually own might not guarantee that you own your followers but the »brand« is an entity that is legally tied to you and out of reach for third parties.

i wish activitypub could copy that system. my username should be a domain that i own with a txt-entry that points to the activitypub-server that i use. let me own my identity.
